Never made it to the top, and that's probably okay. Being in Jersey at sea level two days before, having some margaritas the night prior, and then hopping in my buddy's truck to travel up there, just was too much for my altitude-naive body. But we did stop at that gift shop thingy at Crystal Reservoir, and walking back to the car I heard what was absolutely the loudest crack of thunder I'd ever heard, and this was nine or ten years ago and still stands.
That thunder would be a sign of things to come, as when we got to 11.5ishk feet, the road was closed to a storm. We pulled into the visitor center for a look around, and I had the headache and tingle of altitude sickness, so I didn't do much complaining. Experiencing a thunder snow so high up was fun enough, especially in June.
Would love to get back someday, though. I still can't imagine there are folks who work doling out donuts up top there, and then people like me wouldn't be able to function.
