Almost? ALMOST?!

[–] rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

As far as I could find, the origin of this quote seems to be David Sutcliffe who posted it to Old Twitter on April 8, 2020.

Screenshot of a tweet by user SutcliffeDavid on April 8, 2020 which reads, "Remember when everyone knew pro wrestling was fake and they finally admitted it and the fans didn't care and continued to watch anyway? We're almost there with politics and the media."

[–] cley_faye@lemmy.world 19 points 22 hours ago

I hope people will understand that two dude breaking chairs on each other's back while doing ballet is slightly different than senile clowns pushing half the population of a country into a grinder.

But AEW and WWE are entertaining...there's nothing really entertaining in current politics or media.

[–] null@slrpnk.net 4 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

"Entertaining" doesn't apply exclusively to pleasant things. Politics and media are extremely entertaining right now. They used to be very boring.

[–] chaogomu@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Being boring didn't make them any less harmful to those not of the chosen few.

[–] null@slrpnk.net 1 points 18 hours ago

Sure, but we weren't assessing harm.

[–] zebidiah@lemmy.ca 2 points 23 hours ago

Anger is worth more than mere entertainment in the attention economy...

[–] dzsimbo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 23 hours ago

But there is! Infotainment. It's way more engaging than regular news or just dramas. It's just not the good touch.

[–] oppy1984@lemdro.id 4 points 1 day ago

The difference is when Stone Cold gave HBK the stunner to get the pin it was for the belt, not medicare.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 79 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Slight difference. When Trish Stratus Betrayed Chris Jericho, it didn't cause me to lose health insurance.

[–] Theprogressivist@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago

But it did make me lose my mind as a kid. Fuck Christian.

[–] KazuchijouNo@lemy.lol 52 points 1 day ago (5 children)

I mean, with wrestling that's the whole point.

You watch wrestling for the spectacle, the acrobatics, the drama. It's literally entertainment, people don't go to the theatre and feel disappointed because "it was scripted". Besides, none of the stunts they pull are "fake". They risk their body integrity and sometimes even their lives for entertainment.

With politics, yeah, that's fucked up

[–] RegalPotoo@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Penn and Teller do a bit with a nail gun where Penn does a monologue about how they are magicians so there is obviously a trick, and that's the point - they want the audience to come along and enjoy the show and watch them do things that seem dangerous, while knowing that even if something goes wrong they aren't going to be complicit in someone getting hurt or killed by encouraging them to take those risks.

Idk, not really relevant to what you said, but I think about that a lot

[–] Tonuka@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fascism is aesthetics as politics

[–] KazuchijouNo@lemy.lol 1 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

May I interest you in kill-la-kill? The creator was inspired by the similarity between the words "fashion" and "fascism" in japanese.

Edit: typo

Oh, I remember those times. People did NOT keep watching, as I recall it.

Most felt betrayed and stupid and would never talk about it again.

[–] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Did Americans actually think they were for real? I feel like folks everywhere else understood it but evidently enjoyed the entertaining acrobatics! I guess voting for a rich reality TV star charlatan was definitely in the cards for the US, lol, they can't tell reality from fiction anyway!

[–] Glitterbomb@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

It was pretty obviously an act as early as 1987 when the iron sheik and hacksaw got pulled over in the same car and arrested for dwi/possession. Fans weren't so much angry about the substance abuse as they were the bitter rivals partying together off the clock.

[–] chaogomu@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

That was the same timeframe where ol Vincent was testifying in front of Congress that wrestling was completely fake and didn't need to be regulated like an actual sport, no need for drug testing or safety equipment because it's all fake right?

And the Congress critters are it all up. Never acknowledging that while the ending is predetermined, the path to get there is still incredibly physically demanding and a mistake could result in actual injury or death.

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I 100% believed it was real. But then i turned 10 or so and me and my friends were wondering how this real man called the undertaker just got resurrected

I understood it was a show but somehow finding out Kane and the Undertaker aren't brothers (and this happened recently too, lol) kinda fucked me up. 🤷😅

[–] rozodru@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

if you ever take a glance at the IWC on twitter (Internet Wrestling Community - yes I do watch pro wrestling) you'll find that most still think it's real.

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago

IT'S STILL REAL TO ME DAMMIT

[–] Zexks@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Except I can't be deported when shit goes sideways in wrestling. Politics affects you even if you don't care or try to ignore it. Not so much with wrestling.

[–] Hossenfeffer@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago

Deported straight out of the ring! That's gotta hurt!

Well, with the mcmahon's in trumps inner circle maybe this could change?

he's obviously talking about the russia, russia, hoax

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Politics is show-business for ugly people.

Electoral ones, yeah.

No it's just not being able to articulate or communicate your suffering

If ignorance is bliss, why the shit do we keep getting fascism?

[–] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Americans were culturally primed to nonchalantly accept the charade of their democratic processes.*

When will the "erm, don't you know wrestling is fake" people get it through their damn heads that it's not fake it's fictional! You don't go up to someone watching a TV drama and start lecturing them about how it's not real, do you???

I think it's either Americans who feel angry and betrayed because they actually thought Rey Mysterio was getting choked by Kane, and the other group of Americans who, because they had more than two working brain cells, understood it was just TV but is still annoyed by the first group's antics.

[–] Mickey7@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

It's the same as watching a news source that for years swears to you that something is true and then quietly comes back and tells you that in fact it was not true. There is a long list of mainstream media "sorry we were only joking" incidents over the years. Yet people continue to watch never questioning whether or not they are being lied to .

[–] don@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

When you’re invested in the kayfabe to such an extent that it completely defines the nature of your very identity and existence, the lie is made real, and the odds of you being successfully extracted and deprogrammed go ever distant with each passing moment.

[–] Mickey7@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Wonder how many people remember the decade of the real cults. They would prey on young adults and basically turn them into slaves to support the "dear leader" of the group. And once indoctrinated, no one including their close friends and family could ever convince them that they were being used by charlatans. The only way to free them was to actually hire a "deprogrammer" which was a guy who knew how to finally show them reality. We have too much of the same charlatans today and those who promote them. And the result is zombie like behavior where even if something is good for you personally you reject it because that's what the cult tells you to do.

[–] icelimit@lemmy.ml 1 points 20 hours ago

Wow I need to learn to be a deprogrammer.

And then other get so disgusted by this that they say "oh I hate politics, don't make this political" and disengage, demobilize And you end up with most of the population either kayfabe-dazzle of full demobilized and these two groups weigh more than anyone else in the raw number of voting bodies so that anyone trying to "do a democracy" is completely lost in the noise.

And that's how democracy dies, or rather how it died sometime in the time of Nixon and isn't going to undie, it's undead democracy, we have a "zombie democracy", it's still twitching, it still says

"Their new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this ‘bullshit,’ hook, line, and sinker. They haven’t learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years, Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don’t even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don’t want their support any more!"

And then it says

"Ouf! Ouch! Owie! My bone spurs are giving me veinous insufficiency, I need a little time out"

And just in time for Iron Man to come out and save the day with his "America Party"

Funny how that works out.

Never has this meme held such relevance.

[–] m3t00@piefed.world 2 points 1 day ago

When people talk in 'all-star-wrestling' terminology, I stop listening. politics/news same.

[–] WhatGodIsMadeOf@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

We are there.
