I didn’t even know he was sick.

[–] vxx@lemmy.world 4 points 22 hours ago

He has been toxic for years.

Least right-wing Austrian:

While Baumgartner's stunts inspired millions, his political views were known to cause controversy. On social media, he mocked climate activists and others who sought to limit the effects of climate change, and voiced opposition to LGBTQ rights, according to the AFP news agency. He also once suggested Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán should receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his anti-immigration policies.

Sounds like nothing of value was lost in this accident then.

Exactly what is one inspired to do by someone that jumped from a significant height? To go out and get a corporate sponsor so they can foot the bill for your adrenaline addiction?

So I was entertained for awhile by some idiot bigot that was only ever known for doing dangerous stunts...

Yeah. I'm ok with that. Rest in piss then.

Turns of lack of oxygen to your brain and violent head trauma is a good way to enforce your conservative views.

First reaction: Aw, too bad.

Second reaction, after reading his political views: lol, fuck him.

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago

Dude was a straight up fascist. He is Austrian after all lmao.

[–] StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

I wish he had accomplished this stunt 30 years ago.

[–] notarobot@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

If he where to go to heaven. He would be unimpressed with the height

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 54 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He died as he lived. Being a shit stain.

[–] Tempus_Fugit@midwest.social 5 points 1 day ago

🤣 that's savage AF. I like it!

I don't know too much about this guy, but if you ignore the part about him being a horrible person for a moment and focus more on the part where he did something new in this field, this is pretty much what happens.

People who are seen as trailblazers in these sort of daredevil fields often end up dying young. It may be quite safe to go skydiving, for example, but people who push boundaries also tend to push their luck with safety margins.

[–] chatokun@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago

I was thinking 56 is pretty old for people who do ~~stupid~~ I mean, "daredevil" stunts often.

[–] nandeEbisu@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

It sounded like he was doing touristy hangglidinh, not anything especially dangerous.

Some of these adventure activities end up actually being pretty chill. I did zip lining, and it was like being on a motorcycle with the speeds it reached. Para sailing was the same, ended up being super chill, you're just sitting there and get a nice view.

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

I’ve done both as well and they are very safe. However, paragliding is a little more sketchy to me that I would never do it same for skydiving.

[–] Geometrinen_Gepardi@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I still remember the day of the stratosphere jump. I believe it still is the world record for highest parachute jump.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 27 points 1 day ago

The article says it was broken 2 years later.

May he garden bums in the afterlife

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Baum actually means tree in German but since he was a homophobic bigot and an adrenaline addict, having him calmly tend to a garden of male asses for eternity might be a fitting fate 🤷
