Is age verification such a bad thing? Not just for porn but for every online site you need to be [age] or older for.
- Privacy concerns.
- The anti-porn lobby always tries with more "reasonable" requests first. First it's "dangerous" fetishes. Then it's age verification. Then it's a ban on domestic production. Then it's a ban on ownership. Then the ownership can be punished by death. And by the end, the very same fuckers will celebrate your execution, as you refused to convert to christianity after someone let you know about Jesus Christ.
That's identification, and yes you don't want that.
But it's fairly easy to make a system where an account can be age verified without giving any identity information.
Yes, it's possible to make such a system. However, limiting the requirement to such a system is more difficult, especially with the commercial options out there already that are based around an ID or other potentially sensitive info (e.g., credit history, mortgage records, etc.).
It's not what the OP is about, but check the requirements for various states in the US linky, and you'll see how many of them have identifying requirements built right into the law.
It's easier to oppose the concept generally than to argue specifics, especially if you're among those that believe identification is part of the purpose of these laws not an avoidable side effect.
I've always thought that requiring the sites in question to have easily identifiable metadata to assist with client-side blocking made more sense. Parents can block it on their kids' devices, and adult pervs can remain anonymous.
One of the major porn sites has a banner link explaining why it's so bad. But the basic points they make are:
- It's only ever enforced against a handful of the biggest players, driving traffic to smaller sites. Those smaller sites might also not even be "porn", but include things like Tumblr and Reddit.
- A lot of those smaller sites do not enforce standards as well as they need to. This is particularly true regarding consent, extortion, prostitution, etc. They also suggest it applies to CSAM. So instead of getting some (relatively) vanilla porn, they are exposed to all sorts of horrors.
Other people have already mentioned the obvious privacy concerns, and how it could be used for blackmail, trust in 3rd parties, etc. But this covered why it fails even at its core objective.
