yeah, exactly, even if they use local models (cuz I am sure some people will try to use that as an excuse), it is still the same problem, just pushed to the hardware cost instead of the tokens

anyways, always happy to see people that haven't been swallowed by the AI craze

So, lately I have been seeing AI bros always using the "It democratizes coding/game dev/modding/drawing/music creation/video editing/insert a hobby that requires actual skills" argument. And it always just irritates me.

Like, democratizing a skill means giving everyone an equal opportunity, which is what free (specially FOSS) tools do, think Krita, Blender, Godot, etc... You get the tools that you need for said hobby free of charge thanks to the GOATed people that maintain them. And then you learn it.

But AI, it just works on the basis of who has more disposable income to feed the capitalist machine. Like where is the "democratization" when the person with more money gets the better experience. Isn't that the era of paid software all over again? isn't that literally the opposite?

Yeah, so that is the end of my rant, I just wanted to vent out to people who will understand that sort of thing (talking about a fine echo chamber ;) )

And I hope people point out that stupid argument when they see meatproxies using it :)

MPRIS is the spec that Linux desktops use to make players transfer metadata about the thing they are playing and its state.

For example: title, artists, cover art, position, playing/paused, etc...

It doesn't specify where the metadata should come from, for example the xesam:asText can be populated with lyrics from the metadata embedded in the song file itself, a companion .lrc file or even fetched from lrclib by the player, as long as the player is the one doing the IO and populating it.

yeah, thinking about it, probably the naming of those isn't the best, will make sure to change them and use doc comments

tho, I will probably keep the 2 Hz consts (while adding a _HZ in both their names) as they make it easier to understand imo [changed my mind: I guess it is easier if it is just the intervals]

thank u both for actually caring :)

So yeah, as the probably unnecessarily long title says, this is a CLI that displays the current playing lyrics, but instead of trying to go online and fetch a match it just uses the already there xesam:asText property in MPRIS.

Sadly a lot of popular players that implement the MPRIS2 standard still don't implement that specific one, so it wont work with them. Even the one used in the showcase had to be modified, tho I am hopefully gonna upstream it soon.

I am very strict about AI usage, so for this project the only hint of AI that was used was for tab auto completion that is just used for boilerplate like, idk, implementing the Default trait for PlayerState (not including the actual tricky metadata_last_updated part). Safe to say it was only one notch above no AI at all.

So yeah, here you go give it a try and feel free to roast me, after all this is my first cli and cargo publish ;)

showcase of the cli running: lyrics are synced and auto scrolling

thx for the reply and ye, this is probably the most practical idea rn.

I just feel weird that smth like this is not already FOSS or atleast ad free (given that they should be doing it for the cause) but I guess the whole world is not lemmy :/

first of all if this is not the right place to ask, kindly inform me :)

so, recently I realized that in the last year or so I kinda unconsciously started dropping my boycotting habits (still boycott obvious things like food chains, but things like a gum or a bar of chocolate I didn't really check)

(yes the Macklemore thing is what made me realise (._.;) )

so anyways, I had the boycat app installed on my phone but when I tried to use it now it feels clunky and I searched all the apps I could couldn't find one that doesn't have ads (boycat doesn't, but the accounts and news things kinda suck)

my question is, is there an open source android app that does the same offline (updated regularly but keeps a mirror of the database for use offline)? if not what do u currently use?

until then I will stick with boycat (it sucks the least) and will maybe experiment with creating my own :p
