Probably something that is so basic or integrated into the distros I use that I forget about it because every time I use it, it just works.

As someone who recently started hoarding old tools I wish that was true for all things.

We just recently got a singer 500a and its still impressive the engineering that went into that thing. The machine work is beautiful, and if you told me it was made in a CNC machine today I would of believed you.

Today modern and new, just means slave labor and plastic molded parts. Besides computers a lot of things haven't really changed. And often when they have changed it's for the worst. If I get a sewing machine today it would come with some app and internet connection for no reason, and would have plastic parts that struggle to get through 3 layers of cloth. While the singer 500a was meant to run 24/7 and is essentially the same exact thing.

For the most part the world has kind of been solved sense shortly after the industrial revolution. All the general commodities we interact with where mostly at their peak form back then. Dish washers, fridges, washing machines, driers. They're all almost exactly the same as they where when they where invented. There have been minor improvements that have been added over the years but for the most part things are in general just shittier.

You can blame so many things, you can say that mass production, trickle down economics, exporting labor etc all causes this. You can say that everyones access to mass produced garbage is an indicator of wealth and poverty dropping. What I don't think you can say anymore is that things "products" are better than they where in the old days.

I agree with your statement about cultural aspects though. Other than that when I hear some new innovative product the first thing that comes to my mind is its going to be another internet of things device that constantly bugs me and asks for more data, while providing 0 utility over the old version of the product, if anything its going to add more friction to my task, or attempt to insert a paywall into my life where one never existed before.

With games its harder to objectively say things where worse/better, but this infection of syphoning money out of every possible source infects games too. The only reason I can't say new modern games are bad is because indie games exist. Some of those indie games actually have brought me back to a childhood state where games where actually fun.

Thats not really fair. Morrowind was so buggy someone decided they needed to remake the entire game engine to play it. I wouldn't say most games where like that.

You need a PC crack to the console so check mate atheist. Edit: also I'm just playing.

I know its April fools but the idea of having to buy then download a pizza code, to give to your pizza printer oven, that needed over-priced printer cartridges, that you couldnt refill with your own pizza sauce or cheese, does at least sound real.

Like realistically those dumb kuregs are not too far off from that. We could just add the internet to these things and charge your more for the things you already bought. Maybe each kuregg pod comes with a vanilla burst mode that can only be accessed if you have a subscription model, or pay 50 cents via the app on each cup of coffee.

These fast food companies are going to have to retire soon the way they are going. It cost more to go to McDonalds then going to a real sit down restaurant. And you get less food. Half the fast food places don't even open up their sit down stores past 6pm anyways. you have to drive through or order from a shitty delivery app. At some point they are not going to have store locations and its just going to be selling their licensed food products to grocery stores or ghost kitchens. I could see fast food chains try to make fun novelty products like a counter top mc flurry machine, or the coca cola soda stream that tries to deliver you monthly syrup bags, or soft serve mix that used to go directly to McDonalds stores. Some bullshit with a touch screen and internet with promo codes and ads that always display to you.

Nah I would go with something like "Prager U ai that is being forced into schools is teaching the kids that men can and WILL be forcibly pregenated by dom tops"

Then I would go on to say how the rich don't want ai in their schools and instead pay hundreds of thousands to go to private schools with no computers only 1 on 1 class sessions. I will go on to say how some how Prager U is stealing your tax payer money and making your kids more dumb and teaching them woke gay stuff, because the ai is dumb and made by israel.

I can AdLib this kind of stuff all day.

I personally believe that sometimes to get a message across you have to leave morality behind to appeal to the base who is recieving the message.

I know its bad if I call elon musk a "retard", or if I embrace racisim when I use words like clanker.

But one of the biggest lessons I think we all missed is that during the alt right pipeline around like 2012 was created by embracing the energy of edgy kids. Those kids are adults now and the ones who still are living in gamer gate culture war bs. Those are the people who get pysoped into believing in whatever trump says because they're just tapping into emotions they got trained to get rage baited by when they where 15, and learned all the shitty talking points that they Still repeat 20 years later.

I'm going to say its bad praxis to try to educate someone when instead we should be taking the low hanging fruit and just dunking on them as if we are going back to the age when we called things "gay." We have for force a cultural normity of bullying people for trying to say dumb racist things, as apposed to this momish/teacher lecture that we can't help ourselves from doing. I'm doing it right now.

Embracing terms like clanker and just straight up bullying ai defenders is good praxis IMO.

...And yes I understand local Ai is different and kind of cool, but you have to understand you are like 1% of the people who even use Ai. When the world as a whole says "Ai" they are thinking of the corperate giants who run LLMs like claude or chatgpt. If the term Ai has to get hijacked and turned into this vauge watered down word that refers to LLMs, then Ai as a whole has to get smeared and you have to accept the fact we are rarely ever talking about you. Running a local Ai model is probably infinitely less problematic, and if there was some socialist automation revolution it would come from someone like you using local Ai models.

They are the easiest to rile up, and require the least evidence to be proven for the case you are making. You just have you sound passionate and constantly repeat how you want a better country for working class Americans and it all falls in to place. Say shit like we are getting cucked by Bibi, and big tech. Throw them a few freebies and talk shit about some safe ones like bill gates or mark zuckerberg. When they say something like Facebook bans you for not being woke just nod along and remind them that Ai is the tool doing that. systematically being used to take away your freedom of speech, and is the catalyist to why everyone needs their ID to even make a comment.

Sometimes you don't shy away from something because don't like it or are to thin skinned to let another persons opinions get in the way of your beliefs.

Sometimes you want to occupy "right adjecent" spaces and make them a little gay. Be the voice that interjects and calls out bullshit but does it in a way that appeals to that audience. Like maybe don't unsub from a channel you like once you learn their political beliefs, just be part of the community and try not to shit where you eat.

You gotta be the little ear worm in their ears. Whether it be a relative, a YouTube comment, your friend, whomever. Tell them the same facts you spout off on reddit, just add a little right wing twist to it. Maybe don't even make it about trump. Which is becoming less of an issue now. I don't know if you guys have noticed but the people I work with that are right wing are actually agreeing with me now when I say trumps a pedo or bring up Israel.

I think even the younger republicans who are on tiktok and weird live streaming apps are saying to vote Democrat almost as a punishment to their own party. The whole maga movement feels like its breaking down, and republicans as a whole are getting their brains melted and are very vulnerable to new ideas right now.

When they really sit down and think about it they want the same thing as us. They just have a filter that prevents them from being able to absorb certain shaped info. As soon as you find info that can get through just fucking flood it, and eventually it will all just snap and they'll get it.

Man its weird being on a platform where everyone has the same urge as me to explain very minute details about a very specific thing they know about and write 5 paragraphs about it.

If I would of known only the cool people ended up here I would of made my over a long time ago.

You aren't even going to keep it for blowing out crumbs in your keyboard? I got one of those tornado air whip guns and I bust that thing out everytime I need to work on the car just because I like to play with it. I'll bust out all the floor mats and blast the with air to avoid doing any real work.

Also I don't like using tire inflators, you get a cheap 12v one and you burn out the motor trying to inflate all 4 tires at once. Its good to keep in the car for an emergency but it can't be good for some of the smaller portable ones.

Its just so nice to have compressed air even if you don't plan on using air impact tools. And just having the compressor opens you up to a whole new world of tools not even car related. Sand blasting, spray painting, roofing, framing. Mine also doesnt have enough cfm to do air wrenches but I still love the thing.

Smh my head. I have always heard "assless chaps" as if that was not the normal kind of chaps.

I still think it was a big mistake to bail out the auto makers. Now all cars are just giant phones with some how even worse privacy laws. "Saftey" tech just keeps getting forcefully regulated into them, making them more expensive and making shittier drivers who can't even look in their blind spots anymore because those stupid blind spot detectors. We are pretty much at the point where we have Vin lock parts and can't replace a windshield motor without paying 1.8k to bring it back to the manufacturer, and thats BEFORE the labor from their licensed tech who is the only person who can touch the god damn thing I own and I will be paying off for 48 months at 450 dollars a month.

Oh but don't worry I think its ford themselves that have a patent for self driving cars to be able to repo themselves. So the the poor dealership that fucked me over won't lose any money when I can no longer afford payment on some of the shittiest trucks they've made.

Don't get a car or truck past 2013. Honestly peak cars IMO all existed around 90s-2006. Some good hits in the 80's too but you're prob not going to daily something that old. You all are going to want to learn how to work on your own car. If you don't have the tools and a shop it sucks a bit more and is sketchy sometimes, try to make a car friend or have people to ping off of. You can rent a lot of the tools too but I would insist on buying if its not like 300 bucks all at once. You want a good air compressor, a 12v battery charger/tester, a standard craftsman set, some ramp blocks/jacks, and the basic hand tools and you can do most things just fine.

So much of learning how to fix a car is kind of just having to fix it. I've only had 4 cars ive had to fix and daily drive sense ive started trying. And I came from practically no knowledge. YouTube surprisingly has had every single fix I needed for my exact model, and I would just google my problems and end up on forums from literally 2008 with the exact same problem and it was ususally solved. Most of the time its just replacing sensors, replacing gaskets, changing fluids or cat converter. Sometimes it doesnt fix it, so you just replace the next suspected thing.
