I have an Asus NUC 12th gen with 32gb of ram and 1 TB of storage atm. I plan on expanding it with a DAS then run with that for a very long while until I can get a nice rack to play with and do some sys admin stuff down the line.
But ATM I got an arrstack going for Movies, TV, and Music. Alongside that I have Stalwart for mail, Immich for photo backup/gallery, Vaultwarden for password and auth manager, and opencloud for cloud storage.
There's always a way. It'll just get maybe harder to do at most

Downsides of capitalism
It's always good to have redundancy for a house like UPS battery backups BCDR stuff. Vps would be a way to provide redundancy but I would say make it as redundant as possible while in one place then have that whole architecture in a VPS and or some other server a friend has or something
Social cues must be hard
Maybe protect from the raw public. But from private brokers, heavily doubt it.
