The OpenTTD developers have released a statement to clarify some confusion and misinformation on the Transport Tycoon Deluxe re-release from Atari. As covered recently on GamingOnLinux, if you want to grab OpenTTD from GOG or Steam now, you have to actually buy the classic Transport Tycoon Deluxe. This does not affecting grabbing it from their website directly.

It's a bit of an unfortunate change for the long-time running free and open source game, which is based on Transport Tycoon Deluxe but is entirely free (including their own sounds and graphics). However, the OpenTTD developers appear to be quite happy with how the situation has gone overall.

https://github.com/HarbourMasters/SpaghettiKart/releases/tag/1.0.0

The Harbour Masters team recently released a big upgrade for SpaghettiKart, their Mario Kart 64 fan-made PC port with a bunch of new features.

Like other PC ports of retro Nintendo games, you need to supply your own copy of the game as they do not supply the assets to actually play the games. Which is how they hope to keep Nintendo lawyers away. With the 1.0.0 release there's a new harder CPU difficulty, improvements to the camera, a better custom track system, performance improvements and much more.

Wildfire Games has released 0 A.D 28 “Boiorix”, a new version of the free, open-source real-time strategy game of ancient warfare. With one very important detail. 0 A.D. has been in public development since the early 2010s with numbered alpha versions. Now, for the first time in 16 years, with release 28, the team has dropped the “Alpha” label entirely.

Another major highlight of this release is the addition of a new playable faction: the Germans. This semi-nomadic group includes the Cimbri and Teutones, and features a flexible economy with supply wagons and fortified wagon camps.

Widelands is a free and open source Settlers-like strategy game, and their developers appear to be setting a firm stance against any AI generated contributions. In case you missed it - back in December 2025 they had a big new release.

Since AI generation is a big topic right now causing all sorts of issues like hardware shortages including HDDs and Steam Decks along with price hikes everywhere, and with AI making a mess of other open source projects, it's interesting to see some projects come out completely against it.

The first release of 0 A.D. that doesn't have an Alpha label attached, as the free and open source RTS has grown up with their faster release schedule.

From the Discord:

It's been eleven months, but we're back with a ~~small~~ COLOSSAL Update!

This update includes a fresh take on AoTTG1's Colossal Titan and Trost missions, alongside some other small additions across the board. We've also done a ton of work under the hood, which has led to much better game feel already, such as some hook fixes to make things more in-line with the first game, and these backend changes will also let us make more and better content for you in the future! This also means that we should be able to provide steadier and more frequent updates. If you want to help with those, feel free to apply to join the team in any of the applications channels!

I'm happy to say that a new open-source game automation utility that I've been working on for the past 2 years is now coming to Steam!

It has a website at https://automat.org/. That website might be a little hard to parse - so here are are some links:

While Steam version is still in "coming soon" mode, you can grab a release from GitHub.

One word of warning - it doesn't play well with Wayland (it's fairly hard to interop with other apps on Wayland) - but I'm optimistic about this bit in the near future.
