If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

Was excited to see the baby Screech outside of its box yesterday, and not only that, but it has a new neighbor! This is the newest one taking a nap. Like people babies, holding up that big head is a lot of work, so they just plop down to give themselves a break.

This is the one that showed up last week. Glad to see it adjusting to clinic life.

This was my first look at the new one. It didn't know what to make of me and was doing the circular head bobbing to give me a good once over.

Someone else had beat me to feeding them. Boo.

I did manage to grab a pic of a opossum baby. They tend to scurry off as soon as they're spotted so I was happy to finally catch one.

I just dropped off their meal and I saw it stick its nose out and start sniffing, so I just stood still and waited.

I mixed up lots of different formulas for the next day or two. Raccoon milk and skunk milk were the 2 I can remember. The skunk milk smelled pretty good... 😁

Did some birds also. The Cooper's Hawk was very hungry and I got to watch him "hunt" the bird I left for him and start eating. Got to feed some bluebirds and that was my first good look at them. The baby jays double in size each week I see them. Fed them mealworms and blueberries.

I met the raven I heard about last week! The girls were afraid to reach in there to clean up his thing, so I'm like I'll give it a go! I pulled back its privacy towel and that thing was huge! Getting the messy paper out wasn't bad, as it moved around me, but when it came time for the new paper, it didn't like me working around its legs and looked to get uncomfortable. I quickly grabbed a raptor handling glove from the table next to me! I got it all resituated and called it a day with that guy! I didn't grab a pic because it's latch was a little finicky and I didn't know its behaviors, so I just wanted to concentrate on the job this time.

Til owls can have crossed eyes. So cute!

That's just some optical illusion. The eyes can't move so they can't go cross eyed.

My assumption is since everything in the eye is pretty bubble shaped, it's like seeing a reflection in a water droplet. I can't find a good pic, but I notice a lot in person that they eyes kind of dome out from the face, like an M&M stick in a cookie or something like that. They're so unique looking up close, but I don't know how to describe it any better. I think the camera is just picking up that bent light due to the angle it's at.

Ohh! That's why they can rotate their heads so vastly. I think I recall you having said something before, I'm slipping!

No worries! I don't expect you guys to remember everything!
