Pre-revolutionary French politics. The conservative royalist faction sat on the right of the king and the liberal faction sat on the left. It’s pretty stupid that we still use this terminology, not least because it lumps together political factions that are quite distinct but whatever. Been meaning to read up on this so feel free to add more if you know more than my cursory understanding of this topic.
