Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Billionaire philanthropist Melinda French Gates has said her ex-husband, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, being named in new files relating to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein dredged up "painful times in my marriage".

She told an NPR podcast she feels "unbelievable sadness" about the Epstein allegations and that the people named in the records, including her former husband, need to answer to it.

"I am so happy to be away from all the muck," she said. The couple divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage.

Records released by the US justice department include an allegation by Epstein that Bill Gates caught a sexually transmitted disease. He has called the claim "absolutely absurd".

Holy shit some of these comments are fucking gross and victim-blamey in here. Why the fuck is Melinda the target here any differently than the victims themselves who didn't speak up until later?

I think we all know why none did, just as none of you would in all reality: fear, and who would actually listen without proof?

See the #MeToo movement, how that backfired for so many women, let alone trying to take down one of the richest people of all time. Also for those who paid attention, Melinda had long heavily hinted at this shit.

[–] pachrist@lemmy.world 25 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I think most people's issue is that all she's ever done is hint, and now that there is less reason than ever to hint, that's all she continues to do.

This case needs someone to step up, corroborate the documents, and speak out so some of these things can be unredacted. She, as a billionaire, is best equipped, but chose to keep hinting on a podcast tour instead, and in the current climate, that makes people suspicious.

[–] giantripdrop@piefed.social 28 points 1 month ago

I am just speculating here, like everyone else is, but she is probably just hinting because she doesn't know shit.

"My ex-husband, billionaire tech mogul Bill Gates, used to hang out with Jeff Epstein. Bill would occasionally meet up with him" is the extent should could say and prove. The rest is hearsay.

[–] beejboytyson@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

That's a bad argument, lots of people end up dead

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Yup. If she would have went to the press without evidence, she would not have been believed. Still today people here are very quick to call someone a conspiracy theorist, including probably most of the people in this thread. They would have been attacking her. Not a single doubt in my mind about that.

So at the same time as people say someone should speak up, they keep attacking people who does, unless their sources are accepted as evidence by official media sources.

I dont blame her for being quiet, not at all.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 5 points 1 month ago

Not just not believed, but she could have easily been hit with a libel/slander suit if there wasn't any evidence.

[–] OctopusNemeses@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

It's why nothing will ever change. People don't care more than getting some potshots. It's why the population is so easy to distract.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

Didn't that end up with that movie guy jailed for near life?

[–] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why the fuck is Melinda the target here any differently than the victims themselves who didn't speak up until later?

She's another billionaire who directly or indirectly benefitted from that circle

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago (2 children)

How did she benefit, apart from what I thought people around these parts would've been gleeful to hear that she "took from the rich," and gave much of that money away?

It was a failed marriage; the more she learned, the more she was disgusted. She took the money and left. We don't even fucking know if she isn't partly a victim herself. Nevertheless she's speaking up now, which she in no way had to.

Yet some here would paint her as Ghislaine Maxwell herself, what the fuck?

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 12 points 1 month ago

We don't even fucking know if she isn't partly a victim herself.

One email has Gates soliciting advice and help for dosing his wife's food or drink with antibiotics, since he had an STD that he picked up from some of Epstein's "Russian girls," which Epstein seems willing to do.

So, yeah, she's a victim.

[–] beejboytyson@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

She's not as bad, but she definitely isn't a good person worth defend.

[–] BremboTheFourth@piefed.ca -2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

She is not a victim. I wouldn't care about her at all outside of "tax her so she's not a billionaire," except this publicity does nothing for anyone but her. Chances are she's paying big bucks to do these interviews. I mean it's the same move her ex has pulled the last 20 years!

Maybe she was ignorant and had no access to proof. Or maybe she's into the same shit and wants a squeaky clean reputation to help avoid consequences. Either way, these types of articles shouldn't be trusted, and they certainly shouldn't be on the front page.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago

she probably was an enabler, doesnt want to lose that sweet charity image you made.
