And the homosexuality wasn't because the author was progressive for the time or anything, he just wasn't interested in drawing a man's ass.

From all I've heard about 2.0 it's probably best they only adapt 1.0 and leave it at that. Lesbian sex is cool and all but the fan service is really getting out of hand later on. From what I've seen the Ghost in the Shell manga is basically at least 4 completely different works because they changed so drastically.
