I suppose to understand this we'd need to know how many inmates have officially escaped and survived from other contemporary prisons. Was it common in the 20th century for that to happen?

While that would put things in perspective, Alcatraz is an island surrounded by fairly treacherous water. That's a big part of the "and survived"...
