Theres a reason western european dragons are so popular over chinese dragons or mesoamerican ones. Hoarding is seen as a genuine skill
The mesoamerican dragon deities aren't popular because europeans genocided those cultures.
The loong/snake-like dragons are plenty popular, Tolkien just has gorilla grip on pop culture.
