MILLER: I think it is, without a doubt, true that Israel has committed war crimes.

INTERVIEWER: You wouldn't have said that at the podium?

MILLER: Yeah, look, because I when you're at the podium, you're not expressing your personal opinion. You're expressing the conclusions of the United States government. The United States government has had not concluded that they've committed war crimes, still have not concluded that.

INTERVIEWER: But your personal view is they have?

MILLER: Well so ...

INTERVIEWER: And they were while you were there?

MILLER: But but but ... Yes but here let me let me qualify that. There are two ways to think about the commission of war crimes. One is if the state has pursued a policy to deliberately committing war crimes or is acting reckless in a way that aids and abets war crimes. That I think is an open question.

I think, what is hard, is almost certainly not an open question, is that there have been individual incidents that have been that have been war crimes, where members of the Israeli military have committed war crimes.

In almost every major conflict, including conflicts prosecuted by democracies, you will see individual members of the military commit war crimes. The way you judge a democracy is whether they hold those people accountable.

INTERVIEWER: but Israel hasn't been that.

MILLER: That's my point is we have not yet seen them hold sufficient numbers of the military accountable. I think it's an open question whether they're going to.

INTERVIEWER: I'm really struck that you think now that Israel did commit war crimes and yet at the time, and I get why, but at the time you were at the podium and you couldn't say that, i mean personally that must be very difficult

MILLER: Welllll ... So the state department itself had concluded, they didn't phrase it in these terms, but I think I did at the the podium, a few times, had concluded that it was likely that Israel had committed war crimes, but I do think it's almost certain that that they have.

#1 question the press should be asking

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 76 points 3 days ago (3 children)

So basically Israel is committing war crimes but it's okay because they still might prosecute the individuals who carried out the orders that resulted in those war crimes.

Yet again we see why neoliberal civility is completely and utterly useless

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 36 points 3 days ago (1 children)

All crimes are legal so long as you're punished for it. That punishment could be 20 years in prison, which is then instantly waved because you've got a bright future.

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 28 points 3 days ago

The PTSD these soldiers experience from all the atrocities they're commiting is punishment enough! very-intelligent

[–] mayo_cider@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago

but have you thought about the boost for NATO leadership when we can once again hire the leaders who gave those orders?

The most smarmy version of 'I was only following orders' I've heard yet

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 46 points 3 days ago

It's not even that. It's more like he's deliberately putting himself in Plato's cave. It's like if you saw your parents boning but you started rules lawyering about how technically you don't have an epistemological position of absolute authority to make the determination of whether or not your parents were having sex or if they were just doing an unrelated genital activity.

I'll never forget Matthew Miller for laughing when answering a question about Israel blocking aid to Gaza.

Maybe my #1 most hated individual from the Biden administration. Running cover for genocide day in and day out

[–] Sinisterium@hexbear.net 37 points 3 days ago

Literally spelling out that kamala was an accessory to genocide btw

i mean personally that must be very difficult

politically correct way to call someone a sociopath

Isreal: "We are committing crimes against humanity with the intention of inflicting a Holocaust upon Gaza. Not only will we not punish our soldiers for committing war crimes, we encourage them to do so since all Palestinians are born terrorists."

Miller: "We don't actually know if they're committing war crimes but they will probably prosecute people who do."

Isreal: "We will not, actually."

Miller: "Reporters are antisemites. Do you condemn Hamas?"

There's still time for the world to learn from the past...

[–] copandballtorture@hexbear.net 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's not a coincidence that this guy looks like Miller, right?

[–] MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago

He did a bit already, but no.

A very interesting part of this to me is the framing of war/invasions as "conflicts prosecuted by democracies".

If I was presented this quote in isolation, I would assume he's saying 'democracies are prosecuting people in conflicts for war crimes', - BUT HE'S NOT.

He's calling the act of war/invasion itself a 'prosecution' - hammering home the point that the West is the rightful world police - the judge, the jury, and the executioner. Imperialism happens because (insert country) is guilty.

Judge Dredd style foreign policy.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think he meant to say "pursued" again, I don't think he was thinking of all that.

[–] MaoTheLawn@hexbear.net 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Perhaps, but its interesting to see what his brain defaulted to in the moment.

In almost every major conflict, including conflicts prosecuted by democracies, you will see individual members of the military commit war crimes. The way you judge a democracy is whether they hold those people accountable.

Yes like how the UK prosecuted Tony Blair and co after the Chilcot report, or how the Afghanistan Papers started a giant wave of prosecutions related to the war in Afghanistan

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

When libs quote lofty ideals that they themselves do not uphold because liberalism is an ideology of capitalism not freedom, humanity, and justice.

[–] Kieselguhr@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago

It's quite telling that the ~~stenographer~~ journalist didn't push back on this blatant bullshit.

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 3 points 3 days ago

But in other styles of government if individuals commit war crimes we must judge the government itself even if it holds those individuals accountable? Why should we carve out an exception for a democracy in this regard? Oh, because "Chiner". That's right.

Well, either way, he's begging to be held accountable. Either he is held accountable and everyone else involved in all countries in the west or we must judge all those "democracies". This is the double-standard he set for himself.

"Well... Well... I mean, you see... The state makes me say things that aren't exactly true because they have closed their eyes to the truth. If we don't see the truth then I can't report on the truth! As to why the state has their eyes closed, well I mean come on, how would we continue to shovel money at Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, etc etc. Right? I mean that's what is really important here. Money. Duh. Lives are a dime a dozen, but dimes, well that's money baby! So just look at what countries can't call it genocide and see what military industry exists there and what their interests are."

[–] neo@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago

thanks for the thumbnail to remind me how much i hate his stupid face

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago

But you see, it's complicated because when you have a war, every single boot on the ground gets the chance to do a little war crime, you know, as a treat! Which is obviously very different then if they were ordered to do a little war crime. It's OK if either of those things happen, though, so long as you are punished for it, but who am I to say how these little war crimes happened. Historically, those punishments forced you to become high-ranking officials at NATO or the lead scientist at NASA, real brutal stuff.

the lesser of two evils

[–] Boynomoder@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

These people truly think there will be no repercussions for their complicity.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

Look, one of the things about being a nazi is you're just following orders. barbara-pit

MILLER: But but but … Yes but here let me let me qualify that. There are two ways to think about the commission of war crimes.

This is the moment he realised he fucked up the interview.
