It doesn't really terrify me, but only because nothing has actually changed. When was the last time anyone was ever charged with a war crime without losing a war first? In my cynical-ass opinion, the only true "war crime" that has ever been enforced is losing.

Civilians have always, and will always suffer the most in wars.

It’s only a crime if it’s ever legally enforced. At this point it’s basically

  • “u murdered 150 school girls - that’s a war crime!<waves finger intensively>
  • “okayydokayyy, anyways… I’m off to train my AI with new targets”

The usa shamelessly did them in Iraq, Afghanistan, vietnam. Israel shamelesly constantly been doing them for decades

The difference being that, in the past, they would at least try to dress civilian deaths up as a regretable necessity or the fault of evil individuals gone rogue. Now they're cause for celebratory emojis and American flags in the team's Signal chat.

I don't think it was the case back then either

I'm open to the argument that there are many precedents for the US going into many illegal wars of aggression, but it's a wild take to not recognize that the American rhetoric has... taken a bit of a turn lately.

at least try to dress civilian deaths up as a regrettable necessity or the fault of evil individuals gone rogue

For example in Vietnam the USA did actually blame the death of civilians on the Vietcong by accusing them of using human shields. Israel claimed that the Palestinians voluntarily left the land .

Ben-Gurion and Yosef Weitz is the other side who shamelessly praise the nekba with no excuses

Yeah, but the "human shield" thing is still trying to spin it though, no? At most, Pete Hegseth would dismiss any questions of civilian deaths as "woke media shit".

The claim of human shield seems as bad to me

It's the difference between "shooting and crying" and "shooting and laughing." there's no shame anymore, 0 back pressure against the worst possible depravity, no reason to waste money on PR anymore that could be spent on more bombs, because what's anyone going to do about it?

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I don't see a big difference between no we didn't kill and target innocent civilians it is just the woke media lying and yes we killed civilians but we didn't mean it , it just that "terrorist" was hiding with them

War crimes are not shameful to the butchers enacting them, but there are people with consciences or there.

We must remind every butcher soldier in the american military and the IDF of the kind of disgusting scum they are, always, for the rest of their lives. The mark of enacting or enabling a genocide should never be erased or forgotten.
