Mulan is such a fucking trans masc vibe. And Shan Yu is so unfathomably based for just identifying Mulan as "the soldier from the mountain" because he recognizes her as the worthy soldier she is rather than reducing her identity to some arbitrary gender role.

Weren't Tibetan Tribes known for treating women more as equals than the Chinese?

[–] renzhexiangjiao@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

isn't Shan Yu from Mongolia?

...I am not a smart man, so I don't know.

I just remembered them being called the hun... and assumed they were liken to the nomadic visigoths (Attila the Hun)

Why do i hear people shitting on this movie so much? Sure its not 100% perfect representation but its better than no representation. Especially in 1998?!

I love this movie and even though mulan and me are on opposite sides of the coin, this movie is one of the first things that made me question.

Plus 'Ill make a man out of you' is an absolute banger, song title aside 😂

I've never heard anything but praise for this movie. Edit: I take that back, I have heard one person talk shit specifically after finding out that trans people love this movie, going on about religious bs.

The live action remake shot near a concentration camp, on the other hand... I pretend it doesn't exist.

Pps: my partner is NB and LOVES Man Out of You. Asks me to turn it up so they can hear better (going Deaf)

I think Mike pence famously wrote a review about this lol

Im hearing more and more about this live action remake and im super happy i missed that it was even a thing lol

Are you sure it's not the recent live action remake that people are shitting on? That film had some ties to the CCP, was filmed near a concentration camp, and for some reason gave Mulan superhuman abilities rather than having her become a capable soldier through sheer grit and hard work.

And they gave Mulan a sister whose character arc was learning she needed to stay in the kitchen.

I havent seen the new one

IIRC i saw a bit on bad trans representation (but the movie isnt even about that to begin with), stuff like hinting at it and not resolving it properly yada yada

Never agreed with it, just have seen it, probly on parts of the internet that dont matter to be honest lol

The sequel tho, mulan 2, is garbage. I will say

Personally, I shit on it more for being racist than being transphobic, but there's also a throwaway line in there about crossdressing that makes me uncomfortable. It's not a bad movie overall, and I definitely benefitted from seeing a girl masking as a boy (that resonated with me FOR SOME REASON) being heroic.

Racism is rampant in old disney, its unfortunate.

I rewatched pocahontas as an adult with my kid and straight up had to turn it off on a certain song, if you know you know

Personally, i think its beautiful that people can find their own meaning in media but its good to keep in mind that the intent wasnt really there afaik.

Mulan is amazing, my favorite when I was a kid 😊

[–] brookedSmile@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Top 5 disney movies for sure lol

I guess being born before 2000 might influence my list a bit 😂

[–] Hazel@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nah, they haven't released anything good since then anyways :3

(jk, I actually really like Moana 🤫)

[–] brookedSmile@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Moana was great but did you feel like moana 2 had a real lack of good songs? Thats what i got out of it anyway

[–] Hazel@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Moana has a sequel??

I honestly didn't know 😆 but also don't care, sequels are rarely any good 🤷🏼
