The trailer near set, at base camp if you are doing location shooting, or on the lot if you are doing studio shooting, is not where the person is living, it is essentially their office while at work. Talent needs access to a shower, space to change, an area to eat, run lines, and unwind. They likely also have a hotel room where they are living for the duration of the shoot.

My experience with the industry is Tamalewood (Albuquerque and Santa Fe) and all location shooting, meaning we go to a location to shoot, rather than have a set on a sound stage in a studio.

A typical day is 12 hours, and an actor may have a long break between scenes. Long enough they need/want to be alone but not long enough to go back to their hotel. I worked on one project that was shot on a working ranch. We had to limit road traffic so it would not interfere with indoor daily operations, so running the 50 minutes back to Santa Fe was not an option, plus that 100 minutes of travel could be spent in their trailer.

And while we have a hair and makeup trailer, some actors will want to have theirs done in their own trailer, be it privacy, or to run lines, etc.

Sometimes base camp is a bit far from set, and shuttling talent back and forth can cause delays, in those cases we try and have a holding area for talent, with another for background.

So... No.

The advantage of a trailer is its on set in an area that's securely locked down. A hotel is going to have workers who all have access to your room and therefore you/your stuff.

Secondly, an actor can be expensive but there are a lot of people involved with filming, so that's only one piece of the cost. Not to mention they'd have to pay someone to air the ad.

Third, a hotel may not be very close to the film set, certainly not walking distance. Time is money and even slight extra travel cost, potential delays because of accidents, etc could be a huge set back and end up costing a lot of money in the long run.

Because then they wouldn't be on set anymore, I think.

So many times the “celebrity” will get a hotel room to stay in for the nights and weekends, they will use the trailer throughout the day as they do shooting. They also rent and buy houses near the production and then use the trailer for the day to day.

When shooting a movie or TV show it is insane how much downtime there is.

WHY DO CELEBS GET TRAILERS ON SET OR NEARBY? WOULDN'T IT BE BETTER TO GET A MOTEL ROOM AND ONCE REALLY FAMOUS DO A COMMERCIAL FOR SAID HOTEL AS PAYBACK?

[–] nocturne@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

ROFL, i missed the second part the first time. Op actually suggested paying the hotel in future exposure.

Baby, I'll make you famous.

So, you're suggesting celebrities advertise where they've stayed throughout a shoot and thus make it so rabid fans know where they're likely stay for future shoots? Do I have to explain why that's a bad idea?

[–] Patnou@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago

No I was suggesting after the shoot doing interview for said movie they could name drop them once in a while or at least a commercial.
