an independent inquiry into the Aukus defence pact, launched by a group of Labor veterans and public figures

the new inquiry – supported by trade unions and non-profit organisations

the inquiry, convened under the auspices of the Australian Peace and Security Forum.

It's not a government inquiry, it's a community sand civil society initiative. Its impact will largely come from the news and public engagement it can generate, and picking someone famous to lead it will help with that.
