If you are here asking: "Is this a science meme?"

Probably, yes. We use the Dawkins definition of meme: a replicating idea, not just an image macro with a fact on it. A good post here doesn't need to teach you something. It needs to make you ask something: who, what, where, when, and especially why or how.

Science isn't a filing cabinet of facts, it's a conversation. For example, a photo of an eel or other localized wildlife counts because most people never see one, and wonder is the first step of inquiry. A car meme counts if it makes you curious about what's under the bonnet. If you want to talk about something you noticed in the world, chances are someone else wants to talk about it too.

We moderate for vibe, not category. Pruning is light, especially where a post creates interesting discussion. Experimenting is encouraged.

See the pinned paper on Shitposting as Public Pedagogy if you want the academic case for why this works.

I know this is a meme but it is free and opensource software. Can we please be kind to the people that work to make your life easier.

it's still the best, the issue is GIS ;D

QGIS is great, but the real power horse is GDAL.

I use rgdal in R to avoid doing statistics with QGIS. But for thematic maps I find it very useful. And for nicer looking legends on maps I use Inkscape.

The true power of open source for me is, that you use many programs together to achieve a result that can beat closed source software. It is sometime more work to do so, when you aim for near perfection.

I read the post before the title and was prepared to come at you. QGIS doesn't get enough love for how good it actually is.

Having started with OpenJUMP, I assure you that there are deeper depths to be explored.

I just started using it recently. It is not the most intuitive thing, but I don't see how it could possibly garner such ire.

When people have to use something everyday for work, they become acutely aware of every one of its shortcomings and the reasons behind them. When they realize that it could be better but isn't because of a bullshit reason and, on top of that, there's no better alternative, this creates resentment. Because then your survival depends on you putting up with unnecessary BS.

I actuallt have very little criticism of Arcgis Pro these days. Arcmap sucked ass though, and their apps and arcgis online still does.

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

True, it does make nice print maps. I just resent that I have to run it on the shame box (VM) as it's not ported to Linux.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is QGIS?

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 7 points 1 week ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QGIS?wprov=sfla1

FOSS industry standard mapping software, basically Blender for maps.
