Basically the title. Sometimes it is logged as a failure but most often it's not logged. Been happening for a few days.

Comments are having network error sometimes. I'll see if I can copy the exact error and ammend this post.

No hurrys no worries. Thanks for your hard work!

Edit:

[Upvote errors]

Unknown error. Code '-1'. Key SocketException

And some are 400 Bad Request.

Connect Network Error

I don't think the comment error has anything to do with summit. More likely a broken vpn connection.

I should also mention that its not just piefed but other accounts too.

Mlem is having upvote issues with the new piefed update too. It appears to be an api handler on the piefed side.

Its affecting more than just my piefed account though.

You're hitting your quota.

[–] Maiq@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh there is a quota on piefed? So why is it affecting my lemy.lol account that I don't really use anymore?

[–] rimu@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Oh, I assumed you're using Summit with the same account that you posted your bug report from.

I have no idea about lemy.lol, that sounds like an unrelated issue.

Its very strange as now upvotes are working in piefed but still not leny.lol. When I debug I always try my old accounts just to see if it might be an instance issue because of possible lemmy/piefed versioning issues. Also I use two mobile apps on the regular, summit and intersteller. If one isnt working I check the other. Both great apps!

I had forgotten to test in intersteller though until I started this comment. It appears that intersteller is having an issue with upvoting as well on lemy.lol so I don't really know whats going on at all now.

So there really is a quota on piefed.social. makes sense as its your testing grounds. Did you by chance reset my quota? Could that be why I can upvote on piefed.social again? This is all very strange and I just want to provide the best information I can.

Thanks Rimu!

The quota is daily, it resets at midnight in the UTC timezone. About 2 hours ago.

[–] Maiq@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

Yeah i don't think that's it because I have made a hell of a lot more server interactions in the past and not reached the quota before. Hadn't done much doom scrolling yesterday.

Thanks for the heads up and info! Its good to know.

So after looking at things a little closer I think that the quota is part of the issue. After I reach the quota upvotes stop working in any instance I switch to in the summit app. If I close the app while on a different instance and reopen I can upvote like normal.

Is there a list of instances that do not have a quota? I can see why it might be important but the quota thing kind of blows!

[–] rimu@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There is probably a way that PieFed can decline votes from client apps that doesn't wreck them! I'll look into that.

There is no list but if you post in !piefed_meta@piefed.social asking for instances like that then maybe some will volunteer to host you.

[–] Maiq@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'll probably make a request in the piefed_meta. Having a social app that puts limits on your ability to interact socially seems antithetical to the entire premise of social media. Although in a testing environment the quota does makes sense. Your testing grounds might not be the best fit for me as I do upvote a lot!

I like being positive and I want to encourage people to post and comment. Often times I might not like or even agree with the poster/commenter but I value their interaction and viewpoint and think it's important to encourage participation.

Thanks Rimu! Probably haven't told you that I appreciate you, and I do.

Thanks for your kind words, despite our differences on this.

I get that people want to show support and encourage each other. There's a point, though, where it gets indiscriminate and wasteful.

In my analysis of voting patterns I think it's pretty clear that this intervention only impacts a tiny number of people and that the quota level is set so that 99.98% of people (or 98% if you ignore the less-engaged users (why, tho?)) will almost never use up their quota.

You're in that 0.02% so it feels different for you.

There are a ton of other ways to support the fediverse. Find interesting content to post, write nice comments, moderate some communities, improve the docs for Lemmy, translate the UI, report a bug in the issue tracker, report spammers, spread the word on mainstream social media, donate money, and so on. Get creative.
