Necessity is the mother of all inventions, the saying goes, and Huawei has had to adapt fast or risk becoming a footnote, having to literally fight for its survival.

Huawei revenues are almost back to their 2020 peak

I hope to see free open source, non-big tech Linux OS for phones one day.

I wish phones were more like regular computers where you just buy a phone and then decide which OS you install. Or at least be able to change the OS.

Android's biggest mistake was not enforcing vendors to port newer releases for older phones.

Android's second biggest mistake was splitting and closed-sourcing the Play Services to fix their biggest mistake.

Easier to do when you have a Chinese market as a captive to subsidize your product.

That being said, Chinese tech won't be better, but they will certainly be cheaper and it will eat into US tech's marketshare.

Also keep an eye out for RISC-V (open source) architecture. Chinese gov't is pouring billions a year to get away from x86 and ARM.

Chinese tech (hardware) is already better than most US (chips aside). The no. 1 smartphone camera ranking on Dxomark for the last 5 years has been owned by Chinese brands, who also dominate all top 10 places for battery scores. The reason Chinese cars have blown up locally in china isn't just lower prices, younger Chinese seek better tech and connectivity than VW or Audi can offer.

Huawei invested more in R&D last year than either Samsung or Intel. Software is their next target. HarmonyOS NEXT is now completely decoupled from Android and can power everything from watches to cars. I'd say US still has a 5-year lead in Chips/Software but after that my moneys on the East.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't HarmonyOS just AOSP with their own apps and no Google Play services? Like, don't get me wrong. I would totally champion more devices not having Google Play services. Personally i have been running LineageOS/GrapheneOS without them since 2019.

But why? The kernel is not a Google thing.

they probably consider it as an american thing. but also, users have less freedom on their devices, because good luck to find a better OS for it
