I feel like a massive portion of people are missing the point of this post and jump to the conclusion that OP is some Zionist uncle Sam loving conservative that hates anything slightly left of centre.

The military bases doing the imperialism are named after those guys and what the Confederacy wanted to do if they won the war was take over Cuba and Venezuela and rename the Gulf of Mexico the American Sea. America is what happens when you aren't a tankie and quit Reconstruction.

If you go to the rapidly gentrifying Cincinnati neighborhood of Over The Rhine, it's called that because it was originally made up of forty-eighter German immigrants, who became active participants in the underground railroad, and helped set up social programs to educate freed slaves, and provide them with housing and such.
