A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Much of the world, despite actual misery and pain (like being bombed for the 80th time this year by the Big Satan, which is Somalia's case), still prioritises family and childrearing.
Many people in the West ARE fucking (more than enough to breed at least), they just do the utmost to prevent/"fix" pregnancies when they do, and why wouldn't they? They have no hope for the future (where can the faithless source hope from?) even if they have done nothing but profit from imperialism and they have the most materially comfortable existence ever because of it, they don't know how to connect to people and don't value it either (because at the end of the day, people are burdensome, and building and maintaining relationships demands at least a bit of selflessness which might just be too much/"people are evil and scary so I'm just gonna get a bunch of pets, they can never hurt my feelings nor do they have enough agency to leave me or go too much against my wishes"), and ultimately they simply don't want to cause life is just too fun and having children and raising them properly are responsibilities that are incompatible with the unfettered hedonism and consumerism they want from life.
You hit on a lot of good points. I think you are missing the relationship recession in intimate relationships, which is happening around the world in non-poverty areas. Even if people are fucking, they don't really want a relationship with the person they are fucking, let alone a kid.
I live in a community with a lot of pet owners, so I found your comment pretty funny. Yes, people definitely prefer their pet over people which kind of precludes the close intimate relationships that lead to child rearing.
I would not attribute the lack of children to hedonism and materialism, but I am sure some people could be influenced by this. I think most of it is just a lack of connection with others. I am definitely guilty of not having many friends anymore. I am very friendly and helpful to people, but maintaining long term friendships outside my family is tenuous at best.
I definitely missed that aspect, thanks for your insightful reply. And I definitely feel you on the "trouble maintaining relationships outside of family" aspect of things, being a somewhat hermit-like geek and all. 😔🫶
Unfortunately boomers really hated so many of their kids that they're kids think thats what it is like to be parents.
Faith unfortunately did nothing to save the boomers, that dopamine treadmill effected that too and the idea "what's the point of a soul if no one ever dies?" Lingers in the mind.
We really do have a misanthropy problem in the west. Left and right agree they fucking hate people. They forget people is the sweet grandma, the goofy kid, the kind person who helped them once, the stocker that shelved their food, the HV/AC tech that worked to keep it frozen, etc etc etc. More people then the mind can comprehend make the best parts of our live and take care of those we love. We are part of that too.
