It's a tram/light rail project meant to connect a large island in Eastern Helsinki with downtown. The most significant part are 3 new bridges that only carry trams, cyclists and pedestrians.

The tram will start operation in 2027, but the bridges are opened for pedestrian traffic as they are completed. The next one should be finished later this summer.

Here's a short video of the project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTW2VIf5k0I

That's really cool. Great to see non-motor transport being prioritised. Looks like it'll make a significant difference to people trying to get between those two locations. Good job, Helsinki ๐Ÿ‘

So draisines could operate there until 2027?

Donald Trump has responded, stating that he is completely against bridges for the trams.

Not surprising, Donald Trump hates trams people.

Could you please please not make everything about the wrinkled orange? This post has absolutely nothing to do with that.

If all the people on that bridge were in cars, it would be bumper to bumper traffic.

It goes to show you that if you want to move people, build more things like that.

Calling Toronto Canada. Building a 19 kilometre tram line since 2011, that has not opened yet.

Show Toronto how Paris built 13 tram lines in the last 20 years. Make sure to do it in Parisian French too.

Of course my city is delaying the construction of a fucking BUS line to 2030 because the freeway build out (which is about 3 miles away from the someday bus line) is delayed. Why these two are connected, the public isn't sure. Given my city's ineptitude, at least Toronto is trying at all so I can't throw any bricks.

Edit: but we did declare a downtown parking garage a historic building and put it on the historic register so we have that going for us.
