Usually it's a "you're an asshole" button.

I hear you, but I don't use it if I disagree with somebody, I use it if they're disingenuous or rude or disparaging towards other people. Because fuck them.

To add a little colour to my front page.

These days, mostly for reddit mirror bots.

I dunno what people's obsession is with Lululemon, and I really don't care, but that fucking bot alone is like 5% of lemmy/all, these days.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

I use it for

  1. Not relevant
  2. Needs editing for writing mistakes.
[–] TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

the instance i use doesn't have one

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The instance?
Usually it's a client option, not an instance thing.

[–] Lileath@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Several instances disable downvotes for their users. The one I am on does as well, so that brigading and botted downvotes by queerphobic people are less effective iirc.

In practice I can't downvote things and they also don't get shown to me.

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But you can you still downvote on content from other instances? It'd be kinda strange if an instance prevented their users from downvoting elsewhere

[–] Lileath@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I can't downvote any content from any instance

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Huh, interesting.

I don't think I like that

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago
[–] TheV2@programming.dev 2 points 1 week ago

I use it to order a powerbomb.

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

For posts specifically, more juvenile ass, vagina, dick joke/image type posts.

For comments, I tend not to downvote because I normally don't find a point.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (6 children)

I don't have a downvote button. I disabled seeing downvotes as a whole as they were massively misused and not super helpful.

I must downvote once for every 5/10 replies I make. If I really disagree with you, why wouldn't I publicly show how wrong you are? I can't let my peers be misguided when I can avoid it!

If you're a skater you know there are no rules at the skatepark, except those enforced by those that are at the skatepark...

Same as online communities, there are only ones that get enforced by downvotes.

[–] Alloi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

i reserve it for closet fascists, morons, bots, and the incorrect.

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

i like to wipe my butt with it
