Because nothing rehabilitates criminals better than cutting them off from their families. smh

[–] Ironfist79@lemmy.world 72 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They're not interested in rehabilitation.

[–] pivot_root@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why encourage rehabilitation when you can instead encourage recidivism? Jail a man for a year, get a one-time profit. But jail a man for life...

Obvious /s I hope

[–] Ironfist79@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No /s needed. The prison industry, which shouldn't exist, loves being able to take advantage of people who are locked up.

[–] 48954246@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Read recently about how some facilities are opening up to ICE and a few things suddenly made a bunch of sense

[–] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

The point is to dissapear people.

Normalize less and less communication and visibility with those in captivity until people adopt the idea of

being arresting = death penalty

as normal.

[–] Today@lemmy.world 97 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The cost is already outrageous!! Its disgusting how it takes advantage of families who are already struggling.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 42 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They want slave labor, not rehabilitation.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 month ago

apparently prisoners are also used as part of the census in red controlled states to, what better way then to keep them perpetually there.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There was legislation by the one party that everyone says is like the other to limit it and a president at that time whose ftc worked to limit it. This was recent though being 2023. Obviously no one wanted to have horrible things like they had in those years come the 2024 election. /s - sorry I every once in awhile mention how biden was the best president of my lifetime and when challenged list off a bunch of things he did in his one term and despite all the things I list I forget things like this.

just heard trump is reversing the biden era medical debt can't go on credit report. I really don't get how his supporters don't see him reversing things which I can't believe anyone would not want.

[–] ArtVandelay@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

They don't see it because Fox News doesn't tell them.

[–] PKscope@lemmy.world 89 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The cruelty is the point. GTL made money hand over fist on inmate phone calls for YEARS. I'm talking $15 for the first 3 minutes type of shit.

Fuck this and fuck everyone who backed it.

[–] Fenrisulfir@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What’s $15? 2 days worth of work in prison? So the equivalent of like $150-$600 for most people

[–] PKscope@lemmy.world 27 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Way more than 2 days man. Most I ever made was $0.45/hr and that was the top pay. Most made $0.30/hr. So it could legit be a week of work for that 3 minute call.

[–] missfrizzle@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 1 month ago

prison is just super late stage capitalism 😔

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago

Maybe more, but it’s the innocent family members that end up paying anyway. It’s all fucked.

[–] thisorthatorwhatever@lemmy.world 72 points 1 month ago (2 children)

In reality you should put free phones everywhere in prison. It's literally the cheapest way of keeping somebody occupied.

[–] mos@lemmy.world 61 points 1 month ago

But charging for phone calls combines two things the far right loves: controlling information and abusing positions of power to exploit the poor for money!

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 36 points 1 month ago

The criminals are the ones in the FCC

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 33 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Ah yes, prison phone calls are a crippling burden on the gov. One cruise missile could probably pay for them all.

[–] missfrizzle@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

depends on where you aim it...

[–] Cosmonauticus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Probably at some brown ppl

[–] BleatingZombie@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

It shows how much they value a missile compared to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"

[–] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world 27 points 1 month ago

Keeping their slaves miserable.

This is not an exaggeration btw, the US constitution specifically allows the government to use prisoners as slaves, and they often take them up on this offer.

[–] edible_funk@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

With republicans and conservatives always remember the cruelty is the point.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 month ago

Seriously, who would vote for that, and why?

And why are the US prisons mainly focused in punishment and cruelty, not only for the inmates, but also for their families?

One day these prisoners come back into society, they'll become your neighbor, the guy next to you at the stoplights... Don't you want them to be a better version of themselves instead of a worse one?

Take a hint from the European justice system

[–] SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They have to pay for calls?

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 5 points 1 month ago

Ha, and soooo much more.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Sounds like that these prisoners would be willing recruits for the Allies against the Neo Confederate Axis. If this is how they are treated in a time of peace, in war, these prisoners would be enslaved and abused by Turdpublican bastards.

If there are Blue State military planners, they should make prisons a priority capture target. Their occupants will support the war effort, be it at home or in the field, wherever these people think is best for their future.
