For anyone looking for the classic Fallout experience, the Wasteland series is better than anything you'll get from Bethesda.

so glad i got to experience this game when it came out. it's dated to the point of unplayable now, but back then it was one of the best around

No idea, but probably? Might have to do some wine fuckery but on the surface it doesn't look like the sort of thing that should be impossible on Linux.

I absolutely disagree about unplayable

I've recently played it and it's kinda unplayable on Steam. So many issues and errors refusing to start. The gog version however works perfectly for some reason and I've played through the story. Found some bugs here and there like some quest not registering and the ending not acknowledging the stuff I did at the town with the casino, not the one down south. Also can't fucking believe the

spoilerOverseer kicks you out despite you saving the vault which is total bullshit...

My first attempt to play was only a couple years ago on a modern pc. It didn't work out. I figured it was just not running correctly. I'd bought them in a bundle, and just figured they were pieces for my collection, not actually games anymore.

Definitely playable but it can be a chore at times. 2 is slightly better

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

2 is significantly better imo mechanically, and if you throw a handful of mods on top of that I think it just plays really well in general.

Apart from the beginning. I love FO2, but fuck the temple of trials and the first couple of hours.

When I played through last I modded out the whole temple of trials. Such a waste of time.

Temple of Trials was 100% executive meddling.

Executives demanded a tutorial level, and thus the temple of trials was forcibly conjured into existence against everyone elses insistence and desire.

its the only black mark on a otherwise fantastic game..unfortunately its right at the start and sours to many people on the greater game.

It's absolutely not unplayable now. It's not the slickest but it's no worse than plenty of other modern indies.

Look, I love Fallout. I did my best to play 1 and 2. I own em.
I guess I'm doing something wrong. Unplayable. Literally.

While I'm at it ... New Vegas is ok. Meh. Fallout 3 was better. :]

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You didn't do anything wrong, you just discovered you like the Bethesda type of game play better.

This is why fallout 1,2 and Vegas are rare gems for those that like the more indepth crpgs

[–] dbtng@eviltoast.org 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You talkin about NV?
Boring. Bland. I played it. Guess I got about a third of the way through. Its not the great game people make it out to be.
Like I said, meh. Although your input is appreciated. Glad you liked it.

Or the first two games? Like, I'm not even sure they are running correctly. It's old tech. I chalked their being unplayable up to them being literally unplayable.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Right, it's possible for people to like different things. For the people who like the deeply branching crpgs they like 1 2 Vegas

That isn't your cup of tea, and that's fine! It's not about being right it's about knowing yourself. And you are the expert on you!

[–] dbtng@eviltoast.org 2 points 2 months ago

You like this deeply branching thing. There are other aspects to gameplay. NV is ugly. I grew up in the southwest and have seen quite enough tumbleweeds. The whole crafting thing was tedious. The game needs fixin, crashes frequently. I gave up when my annoyance level exceeded my entertainment. That was well before your deep branches. NV is meh.

Noah Gervais' video essay on the whole Fallout franchise is an epic undertaking to watch all of - and I have done so twice. It's delicious.
