Oh my god, guys. The fediverse is changing my life. In an age of a profit driven, AI enshittified internet, fediverse platforms like Lemmy and PieFed are a fucking god send.

I swear to god, I feel my brain is being cooked alive by the overwhelming algorithm bullshit that Instagram and YouTube is driving down my throat. But since discovering PieFed? On top of using Mastodon, most of my social media takes place on the fedi now. What a fucking privilege. I can reach the end of my days without my brain feeling like jelly… I can use these platforms without feeling like I’m causing harm to myself.

Is it perfect? No. But it doesn’t need to be: it’s not infested with AI bullshit, and most my instances defederate Nazi bars.

This is the internet I’ve been yearning for the past couple years.

I’ll be contributing to PieFeds source code whenever I can. This shit is so fucking important for the internet.

We're doing corn now apparently. I guess that one guy finally pooped.

At the risk of sounding cheezy (and in a very nerdy way no less), Piefed feels like the future. Best principles of what made the internet good back in the day, with a modern approach. And all of it done on enthusiasm, DIY contributions and some modest donations.

Side note, one way to make YT work better, is to simply make a bookmark folder linking to the video pages (sorted by new) of the channels you watch. Even the search in YT is godawful and clearly design for "engagement" instead of finding what you are looking for.

I use the Unhookd extension on YouTube so I do not get lost all day. Thankfully always turned my nose up at Shorts, but removing them still makes the real estate stuff I actually use instead of something that makes my sensitive self start thinking about how much I hate the short form content we-want-to-addict-you reduce-friction-to-keep-you-scrolling-for-days trend. No more suggested videos. No Live Chat. No Home Feed. Just me and the search bar, going directly for the video I need/want to see.

I will need to look up this extension, sounds very useful.

The exciting this is the Fediverse is ANYTHING you want it to be.

There's YouTube - Peertube, Twitter - Mastodon, Reddit - Piefed, Forums - NodeBB, Blogs - Ghost, Twitch - Owncast.

The only thing Big Tech can do that we can't or won't is take away peoples choices, rights and enshitify everything.

Contribute where you can! Doesn't have to be code. Just being here gives us all more power. Those companies don't want to admit WE ARE THEIR CONTENT. Without people they're useless. We're taking it back.

I'm no Dev, so I started a show to talk to folks. Do what makes you happy and share. Even if it's as simple as just modding a community and being friendly and welcome.e. we do this together!

Liking efficiency, I also love practical feeds become once you curate things to your liking, specially propagation happens and even if it doesn't, there's still widespread RSS and bridges adoption. If I want, I can even follow profiles from Threads and Bluesky, and also news and blogs through such.

Plus if a platform goes down, posts still stay around, propagating as people interact. Great for super old contents. =D

How to follow RSS from PieFed?

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 4 points 3 days ago

Indirectly, through some other instance or bot that posts to communities.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 9 points 3 days ago

It is great in concept. Would be a lot better if any of my real life friends actually used it.

Good that we have a better alternative. I'm on Mastodon too. Enjoy your stay.

Imagine a nostalgic ezboard replacement built on top of Piefed. :)

Also I know what you mean, I've been looking at the source code and learning. I'd love to see some alternative themes like Lemmy has (especially an "old Reddit" type of theme for Piefed.

Check out the developer docs, specifically the theming guide if you are interested. If you have any questions, I wrote them, so let me know!

As it becomes more popular, bots will pivot here, and it will be harder to block them than in centralized platforms. Even after being banned from one instance, they can move to another and continue. The Reddit-style moderation system puts too much strain in a handful of users making necessary to rely on automods. The automod on lemmy.world banned me instance‑wide for reasons unknown, and as the number of bots increases, the automods will become looser. There will be many false positives and genuine users being banned.

I can’t disagree with you fully there… but I’ll say that: after 6+ years on Mastodon, yeah the bot problem has gotten worse, but the core of its magic? It’s still there. I feel like that’ll ring true for PieFed and Lemmy too.
