Wait, you can donate plasma two times in one week where you are? That feels kinda insane.

In Australia it's 12 weeks for whole blood and 2 weeks for plasma. Or 4 weeks for switching from whole blood to plasma.

I'm always surprised when I'm reminded that that show was Disney. It feels so similar tonally to BTAS, I'd have sworn it had to be from the same studio. Especially with how off brand it is for typical Disney cartoons.

Apparently a live action reboot is in the works. Can't say I'm holding my breath on that one.

They're pretty much your bog standard right-wing media. They don't endorse ridiculous conspiracy theories or the overthrow of democracy like Fox News does in America or Sky News does in Australia, and they basically try to stick to relatively factual reporting. But they also, as you say, bias towards the right in story selection. And they're relatively low-brow, going for sensationalism rather than good journalism, more often than not.

Another brief period of not bad?

The 50s and 60s were the peak of Robert Moses and similar figures in American urban planning. Explicitly racist, destroying the liveability of cities in ways that are still ongoing to this day, with only some of the very most progressive cities even starting to try to turn things around.

It was also the peak of the red scare, during which the "freedom of speech" Americans are so proud of took a back seat to witch hunts over political ideology. Along with that you get the height of US intervention in foreign governments, with the US involvements in Pinochet's regime in Chile probably being the most striking example, but far, far from the only.

So nah, it might have been a period of time when the US was perhaps less bad than today, but it's still not great.

Yeah I actually pointed out in a comment that I posted presumably after you loaded the page (only a few minutes before your comment was made) that the problem was me. I hadn't subscribed, so my instance wasn't federated with it.

Thanks for that link though. I knew that tool existed but couldn't remember the name or URL of it and couldn't find the last time I had seen it discussed. I like the idea of crossposting the bigger news, too.

Bit of a misleading title, considering the majority of the article deals with Brisbane's 50 cent (i.e., very cheap, but not free) fares, and other examples include "free only on Friday" (i.e., the day work from home is most popular) and "free only for children". Still, the system rolled out in Queensland is an extremely welcome one. Everyone benefits from it. No complications around "do you qualify, do you have proof of qualification" or needing to plan your trips around limited locations or times the cheap fare applies. Just a blanket, easily-affordable option.

Some context that people might find interesting. The trial was begun about 2 months before an election, in a desperate attempt to win back votes from the centrist party who was flailing in the polls with a right-wing party about to win. It didn't work, but the trial was so successful and popular, the right-wing party had no choice but to keep it. A delicious turnaround from the last time the right-wing party was in power in Queensland (2013–2016), when they rolled out a system that required you to carry three different cards with you to get the student discount on the extremely expensive public transport. Your Go Card as proof of payment. Your student ID to prove you were a student. And your "Tertiary Transport Concession Card" or TTCC to...further prove that you're a student, I guess? Universities were forced to create systems to verify students when applying for a TTCC. To this day I genuinely have no idea what purpose the TTCC was supposed to fulfil other than to increase the rate at which they could fine students.

Also, left: plush, cushy, soft.

Right: uses raw muscle power to go. Powered by the meat you ate last night.

🤦‍♂️

Ok that's on me. I wasn't subscribed to the community, so my instance wasn't getting any federation through. Still, I dunno if I should be nervous or not about reddthat's longevity. It does seem to be a single-user instance, which feels risky.

edit: a lot of this is wrong. See my reply.

I'm still up in the air about what to do with !aom@lemm.ee. My first instinct was to take this as an opportunity for consolidation and to try to grow an RTS community by posting to !rts@reddthat.com.

But it doesn't look great right now. In the original community I could pretty reliably get at least 2 or 3 upvotes indicating people saw it and appreciated it, in this new community I'm getting nothing. And neither is the sole other poster, @reddthat@reddthat.com, who was posting to it. And the other related communities, !strategygames@sopuli.xyz and !realtimestrategy@lemmy.world are even more devoid of response.

So I'm wondering if part of the issue is that reddthat may be too small of an instance and many users may not be able to find it due to federation issues. And maybe I should take the opportunity to sync over to Piefed, or launch a community in one of the instances recommended by @Illecors@lemmy.cafe or @DosDude@retrolemmy.com in the community's announcement post (or go with my initial idea of lemmy.zip).

But obviously the issue can't only be the size of the instance, since even the two larger existing instances are seeing so much less engagement than the one I'm moving away from. I'm at a bit of a loss as to why this could be and what to do.

In aussie.zone we use !meta@aussie.zone.

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 1 points 22 hours ago

Daaang. Would you care to share your thoughts on yesterday's puzzle?

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 1 points 22 hours ago

Oh damn that's a good strategy. It always takes me ages to find homophone & sound connections.

Out of interest, I don't think I've seen you post Connections before, although you've been on !dailygames@lemmy.zip a heap. Did you only see the post for the first time today? I wonder if that's because you may have bots disabled on your Lemmy account, so you can't see the bot that I normally use to make posting easier?
