Discuss migration, immigration, emigration, deportation, & expatriation, here. This is the first English-speaking properly defederated community for this topic.

Why is it on slrpnk? A: Climate change is a culprit for migration of animals generally. This forum is focused on human immigration (but perhaps it should be open to climate migration of other species).

And certainly climate need not be relevant. Anything about xenophobic bullying of people for moving about is fair game here. (Solarpunks like their autonomy)

This pre-existing community seems related but it’s not English:

Yes, it is batshit crazy that this happened, and that municipalities actually stripped people of Belgian nationality that they already acquired.

Even more puzzling is how flimsy Belgian nationality is -- that you can lose Belgian nationality so easily and without even any kind of wrong-doing.

The Federal Ombudsman says the ā€œImmigration Office is exceeding its powers.ā€ But AFAICT the immigration office is just making a request -- one that can and should be ignored.

Very bizarre that the municipality has these powers. Sure, the muni has the power to grant nationality. Fair enough. But I find it a bit disturbing that the muni has power to strip nationality. Such a serious assault on someone’s human right to self-determinism should be a federal procedure, no?

The recipe for disaster goes like this:

  1. tighten your border: unleash hard-assed ICE bullies; stop approving renewals on existing visas, then deport those with expired docs
  2. drain their brains - exceptionally allow privileged immigration of engineers, scientists, doctors, lawyers, etc, those who are most needed to develop their homeland are poached from their homeland
  3. cut off aid to foreign countries
  4. impose tariffs, but then do deals with other developed countries. Make the deals better for other MAGA (immigration-hostile) nations and lousy for charitable socially responsible immigration friendly countries like Spain
  5. promote fossil fuels and penalize green energy suppliers - push climate denal as climate change impacts developing countries the hardest (the same countries with minimal contribution to the problem)

Did I miss anything?

Shouldn’t this collectively be regarded as an attack on developing countries? Just as corporations and billionaires are extractionist, whole MAGA-like countries also behave as large-scale extractionists.

These issues are always presented separately in the press. But it seems like the press could do more justice by putting them together. E.g. whenever a journalist reports an anti-immigration move, they should also bring up the brain drain and aid cuts at the same time. It should be presented together as an assault on developing countries.

How should we name this practice? Maybe woke spelled backwards?

EKOW: enshitify and keep others worse

Late update:

Stats from the radio show:

  • 125,000 immigrants entered NZ in 2025 (according to moderator)
  • ~10k immigrants/yr (on avg) are skilled workers filling shortages (according to an interviewee)
  • (unrelated to immigration) 1% of GDP is spent on defense

The greens and labor seem like the smart parties in the room. Immigrants are being scapegoated by the govs failure to invest in infrastructure.

Europe is rapidly building an AI-ready smart-border regime — bankrolled by the EU, pushed by Germany and tested in Greece. Defense and security firms are among the biggest winners. Much of it is unfolding under the radar, with safeguards for people on the move lagging behind.

An ICE officer fatally shot a woman Wednesday morning in south Minneapolis, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

From the linked PDF:

Give the officers my ID?
If the ICE officer demands your ID, only show a driver’s license or another ID issued from the U.S. government. DON’T give the officer any false or foreign documents such as a passport, consular ID, or an expired visa.

In NY, the DRIVER must show any officer a driver’s license. If you are the PASSENGER, you do NOT have to show the officer an ID or give any personal information, including your name, address, or place of birth.

This seems off.

My understanding: in the US, nationals need not carry ID (while immigrants must carry their docs). Exceptionally, if you are driving a car, then the state requires you to carry your driver’s license. The DL is the property of the state. The fed does not issue driver’s licenses.

There is no such thing as a US federal driver’s license. The quote above refers to ā€œID issued from the U.S. government,ā€ that would be a passport. A passport is not going to be carried daily inside the issuing country.

Traffic enforcement is not in the jurisdiction of federal ICE agents, is it? Can they really demand your driver’s license under this kind of false pretense of ensuring that drivers are permitted to drive when in fact the real reason they want to see the DL is to snoop on citizenship?

There are some interstate highways that traverse state borders. Does it make a difference whether or not someone is driving on one?

And what about cyclists? If you are cycling and happen incidentally to be carrying a driver’s license (which is not needed to cycle), must you produce it on demand?

It’s bizarre how that doc singles out New York. How does it differ from other states?

what the ACLU says

The ACLU has some advice:

https://www.acluva.org/know-your-rights/stopped-by-police-or-ice/

This is also a bit imprecise. Of course drivers must show their DL to ā€œpoliceā€, but what about ICE? They just leave that up in the air.
