Someone else will just tarnish any new term. Our best bet is to just educate people what it actually means.

Like how "communist" and "socialism" has been made into a dirty word. And let's not forget the most recent one, "Antifa".

We just have to fight against it. And do our best to correct the misperceptions when we can.

I started watching YouTube in the last year after successfully withstanding it all this time. I make at least some effort to protect my data with mixed results.

But the algorithms has decided what it wants to show me. And yes it includes a large category of revenge against militant feminists. They’re clearly ai slop and entirely fiction. But I have watched some (which means I got more 🙁) and I do like a good case of karma

So yes, there is significant ongoing effort to paint the term “feminist” into the worst case scenario. If you keep watching that, it will affect you

….. and I have to figure out how to make the algorithms the work for me. Unfortunately that probably means giving away more personal data, including truthful data, so you can’t win

The algorithms are hot garbage. I don't know what I clicked or when but ive been getting increasingly videos for fake garbage crap too. Stuff about conspiracy theories and astrology and I don't get it.

I never watch any of that "it was aliens". And I'm vehemently against astrology b.s.

Since scrolling on my computer "counts" videos as watched that my cursor rolled over (per my watch history, I have confirmed this) I'm now stuck in a never ending feed of garbage.

These algorithms are the worst.

I'm also pretty sure they work by real world proximity to others.

I had been living in Chicago and took the L train a few times where it was pretty crowded. Get home and I'm finding alt right videos on my feed.

Right after getting home from the train.

Happened on two separate occasions.

Coincidence maybe. But thinking algorithm assumed me standing next to someone for 45 min means they are my friend and starts suggesting to me what they watch.

Have you noticed anything like that?

I could be wrong. Just seemed sus.

Not like that, but either YouTube leans way conservative or ……. Perhaps it’s purely demographics. As a middle aged white male, of course I must be conservative, love stories of revenge against feminist/hoa/boss, and i really want to be advertised scams like ivermectin and viagra substitutes.

I figure they must have at least figured out my demographics and making assumptions about that is more important than looking at who I follow and offering similar

Yeah I'm betting they have a demographic profile for you and that's a lot of it. It would explain why I get astrology b.s. it's pushed on women a lot.

One thing I always liked about reddit compared to other social media was I felt like I had more control over the content I saw.

Same for Lemmy.

I really dont like being fed slop that an algorithm decided I should want based on my age/gender/ethnicity/sexual orientation, and any number of other identifying information.

I'm also someone who likes new things. New creators, new topics. And social media traps you in bubbles.

It's became so hard to find smaller channels on YouTube.

Have you heard of the dead internet theory ? It really seems inevitable sometimes.

It’s also possible my pitiful attempt at poisoning the data backfired on me. When they force me to enter my birthday I select the oldest allowed date, so maybe they think I’m like 120

That's pretty funny.
