I'd say it was good casting if he legitimately felt sorrow for the crimes he did on behalf of the IDF, and used his platform to speak out on behalf of those currently being genocided. But in the interviews about it he seems to have a casual view on his crimes, and mostly focuses on his own mental health.
Frenchie as a character has deep sorrow for his past actions, but the actor doesn't seem to.
So in practice it's terrible casting. It shits on all of the messaging of the show.

I mean, what if he does have actual sorrow, though? Sometimes people can take evasive means in public to deal with guilt. We can't use just body language to guess his actual thoughts.
Maybe he does, but his actions don't indicate it.
