Remember, just because the USA and Russia are all in favour of it that doesn't mean Alberta separatism is a bad idea. It's a terrible idea no matter what they say.

The "stay" petition significantly outperformed the "leave" petition.

It doesn't even matter, though. The UCP would never actually do a referendum. Thier whole playbook is based on Sabre rattling Ottawa. If you actually have to lift your skirt, the mystery is gone. All polling shows a referendum wouldn't even be fucking close. Once that's done, what Sabre you gonna rattle?

The political value lies in the threat, and the threat only carries the weight of the potential of coming to pass.

The "stay" petition significantly outperformed the "leave" petition.

And there is no indication that the stay petition cheated, while there is strong evidence that the leave petition broke a few laws to get their number.

...perhaps, but this a particularly vulnerable time for us to be doing that - sedition charges and jail time will cool some of the hotter heads, and once the yankee money dries up when they descend into civil war 2.0, this will be a dead issue

[–] Windex007@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lol.

I appreciate the fear and concern...

But locking people up for sedition would make things 100x worse. It turns a poorly defined and completely abstract boogeyman with complete abstract "victims of federal government overreach" into a concrete boogeyman with real victims.

There currently is no problem... but this is a Trump-in-Iran level of diplomacy suggestion.

You "appreciate the fear and concern?"

the current boogeyman is not "completely abstract", it is yankee and russian funded destabilization programs tragetting Canada, likely aiming to use a failed referendum as casus belli to go full Ukraine on us

There is a problem, and you appear to be part of it

There is no problem. Since talk of the petition to leave started, support for leaving has GONE DOWN. The more people talk about it, the LESS Albertans want to leave. USA and Russian interference is having a net negative effect.

The Boogyman that scares AB people into wanting to separate is Ottawa. Russia and the US are failing to convince Albertans to leave, because there is nothing concrete to argue that they should. All of the beef with Ottawa is abstract.

If Ottawa starts arresting people for sedition, then it won't be the USA or Russia turning any tide, it will be Ottawa, making a completely idiotic and unforced error... handing the already-doomed "leave" movement actual tangible reasons to sway people.

Your plan provides Canada a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I can't fathom the depth of misunderstanding on your part that makes that seem like a wise thing to do.

It's actually gross to invoke the name of a Canadian hero as your username and be pushing divisive pro-Russian propaganda.

You show up and your solution to a non problem is to start plucking people off the street for anti-gocernment activities like the fucking KGB and expect anyone to buy it?

Get fucked.

I invite anyone reading this to view thier comment history and ask yourself "does this account appear to exist solely to wedge division in Canadian communication forums"

I'm GLAD you levied the accusation against me. I wouldn't have even thought to look at your comment history otherwise. At first I thought you were just an idiot but under even a small amount of scrutiny it's abundantly obvious you are on lemmy for exactly one reason.

[–] HeroicBillyBishop@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

yes, you do, thank you for pointing out your treachery

Again, for anyone who wants to understand why this guy is a textbook example:

Alberta separatism: Russia targeting voters, study says https://share.google/6RU4FQd5G54IJ7cIU

Very relevant, from the article, from an expert on how these troll farms operate (emphasis mine):

“They will be on both sides online, amplifying it and changing the language to become more violent, changing the language where people who disagree with are you seen as an existential threat to the country and so their job is to amplify conflict,” McQuinn said.

The minute I say something like "relax", buddy is saying "we need to round these people up and arrest them"

When I say "we absolutely don't need to do that", they say "you're a part of the problem."

[–] HeroicBillyBishop@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago

agreed on all points

now fuk off shill, you know you are part of the problem
