Makes sense, there's lots that they can do with it

  • summer time, tensions are heated
  • heatstroke, food related illness, fireworks injuries
  • conflicts around culture and patriotism/nationalism

I always preferred PrivacyGuides. Looking forward to the activitypub integration with their other community

Mercury's surface temperatures are both extremely hot and cold. Because the planet is so close to the Sun, day temperatures can reach highs of 800°F (430°C). Without an atmosphere to retain that heat at night, temperatures can dip as low as -290°F (-180°C).

I think this is the big reason. It's also close to the sun, which makes it difficult to land something on it. There's likely not as much value in doing it just yet, while we can gather data about its composition through other methods. Eventually we might do it, and I imagine it'll be for resources of some kind

https://www.space.com/41664-mercury-lander-mission-study-proposal.html

I found this article just now but have read it all yet. Seems relevant

Mercury has been devoid of spacecraft companions since NASA's Messenger mission ended in 2015, and while the next mission bound for the innermost planet launches later this year, it won't arrive until 2025.

On the last point, here is that new mission and the updated timeline

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BepiColombo

On 15 May 2024, ESA reported that a "glitch" prevented the spacecraft's thrusters from operating at full power during a scheduled manoeuvre on 26 April.[9] On 2 September, ESA reported that to compensate for the reduced available thrust, a revised trajectory had been developed that would add 11 months to the cruise, delaying the expected arrival date from 5 December 2025 to November 2026

In their defense, for someone who has never heard of Lemmy/the fediverse, it's reasonable for them to be cautious. So many other platforms are VC funded, do guerilla marketing, have hidden agendas, etc. It's especially bad on Reddit with all the AI astroturfing now.

I've seen a bit of that in the Canadian reddit comms, where new users are initially concerned that they're joining another american tech startup's platform. Once they learn how the network works, how the software is open source, and (specific to lemmy.ca) that the site is managed by a non-profit and the servers are in Vancouver, they're more excited about it :)

Yes it's hard to tell what they're looking at, but I imagine the less info they can collect from your device the better?

I usually lookup 'alternative frontends' and then find a list like this on github type sites. They go out of date often

https://github.com/mendel5/alternative-front-ends?tab=readme-ov-file#facebook

With the proxy websites, it's more of an alternative frontend where you still need an account on the platform.

What might be happening is

  • your device or IP address is flagged from your previous attempts
  • they've connected it to your real name / shadow profile somehow

So if you really need to use it and there's no alternative, you could do one of

  • make the real account, ideally from a privacy friendly browser, and give the absolute minimum info you can. Name and email, no profile image, privacy settings to max

  • make an account on a new device / wifi network, and have it be believable for the kind of person joining Facebook for the first time. I haven't tried this myself but I've heard it mentioned before

Whether you made an account or not, you can keep an eye out for alternatives. Over here there are a few alternatives, and one of them (Karrot) has been growing in popularity

https://betakit.com/south-koreas-neighbourhood-buy-and-sell-app-karrot-hits-one-million-canadian-users-builds-toronto-engineering-hub/

It might enshitify at some point, but it's been nice so far

It looks like there are a number of reports on this post. If you could edit a tag into the title, such as [satire], that would probably make everyone happy

When an instance is defederated, that happens at the server level. That content doesn't get loaded onto your Lemmy instance to begin with, and so you wouldn't see anything. From memory the comment count would be lower on a post on your instance compared to the foreign one

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

That might be your language settings. Go into your main Lemmy settings and make sure that 'Undetermined' is selected

Did you happen to change the link? I don't notice the issue

It might also help to take screenshots of what you're seeing

Oliver cited an interview with Facenda and his mother and primary caregiver, Joann, on the difficulties faced by people with disabilities as the state shifted to for-profit “managed care organizations”, leaving Facenda spending hours in dirty diapers.

Oliver played audio from Morley’s testimony at a 2017 administrative hearing, that aired as such: “People have bowel movements every day where they don’t completely clean themselves, and we don’t fuss over [them] too much. People are allowed to be dirty … You know, I would allow him to be a little dirty for a couple of days.”

Oliver said of the snippet: “Look, I’ll be honest, when I first heard that, I thought that has to be taken out of context. There is no way a doctor, a licensed physician, would testify in a hearing that he thinks it’s okay if people have shit on them for days. So, we got the full hearing, and I’m not going to play it for you, I’m just going to tell you: he said it, he meant it, and it made me want to punch a hole in the wall.

“If I absolutely had to put it into words, I guess I’d say fuck that doctor with a rusty canoe, I hope he gets tetanus of the balls,” he continued. “And if he has a problem with my language there, I’d say I’m allowed to be dirty. People are allowed to be a little dirty sometimes, apparently that’s doctors fucking orders.”

Oliver also added that legally, he was required to say that AmeriHealth Caritas restored the patient’s services, but called it a “disgrace” that it was disrupted in the first place.

The lawsuit argues that context cut from the show changes the meaning of Morley’s words, which they quote as thus: “In certain cases, yes, with the patient with significant comorbidities, you would want to have someone wiping them and getting the feces off. But like I said, people have bowel movements every day where they don’t completely clean themselves and we don’t fuss over too much. People are allowed to be dirty. It’s when the dirty and the feces and the urine interfere with, you know, medical safety, like in someone who has concomitant comorbidities that you worry, but not in this specific case. I would allow him to be a little dirty for a couple days.”

I don't see how the full quote meaningfully changes the meaning of the words

Hey, #mstdnca folks, some news to share.

We're in our 4th birthday month!

As many know, we've been working toward non-profit status. Despite hurdles, we've been fighting to get there.

This morning, I'm excited to announce that I've accepted Rogers Media's purchase offer to acquire the instance.

I'm excited to see where we go from here and hope all are excited too!

UPDATE: April Fools!! 🤪

Thank you to everyone that nominated songs, discussed the options, and voted in the survey! Sometime in the future, we will post a detailed breakdown on all the songs and how people voted.

If you want to listen to the winning songs, you can find them below:

| Artist Name | Song Name | Song Link | YouTube | Spotify | |

|

|

| | Rezz, Virtual Riot, One True God | Give in to you | song.link | YouTube | Spotify | | Billie du Page | Fake Friends (liste française) | song.link | YouTube | | | Elisapie (ᐃᓕᓴᐱ) | Quviasukkuvit (If It Makes You Happy) | song.link | YouTube | Spotify |

As a note for transparency, two songs tied for first place in the English category. However, when looking at the individual survey results, at least one of the submissions seemed to be a duplicate. If we took that into account when calculating the results, we got a clear winner for the English category and no change in the relative scores for the French category.

Elections Canada has released this resource with some common bits of false or misleading content about elections on social media: https://www.elections.ca/content.aspx?section=res&dir=dis&document=index&lang=e

We plan on pinning this resource, and we are proposing the following rules:

  • Posts or comments with inaccurate or misleading information from this list will be removed, and users are encouraged to report them
  • Repeatedly posting such content will result in a ban from the community until April 28 (at a minimum)

So far we haven't noticed any serious issues, but we want to get ahead of anything that might come up

I saw this article earlier:

Tesla 'going bankrupt' is endpoint of protests, says local organizer

In the spirit of right to repair, self-hosting, giving a second life to old devices, and limiting data collection by car companies:

  • What are some considerations?
  • Are there any projects worth keeping an eye on?

An example that came to mind was Valetudo, which is a cloud replacement for vacuum robots enabling local-only operation. Some robot vacuums are easy to install this on, and others require more invasive modifications.

What I've found so far:

  • FreedomEV, a project that was presented at FOSSDEM 2019 but doesn't have recent activity
  • TeslaMate, which is a popular and active selfhosted data logger for Teslas, but not necessarily a replacement for the software

I haven't played around with it yet, but it looks neat

This small but mighty update includes some exciting new features and improvements to Zen, such as passkey support for MacOS, and a media player controller that's fully integrated with Picture-in-Picture mode.
