My aunt got locked out of her house because the battery powered smart lock died in the cold. So she couldn't get in when it was late at night and freezing cold. Had to get a locksmith out, which probably cost her a couple hundred dollars.

I mean that's fine but we have a vestibule that wouldn't be locked. You can also have keys and an electronic lock if you forget your keys. Kinda pointless comment. She would be locked out all the same if she forgot her key too right?

There are different failure modes, yeah. My preference would be a mechanical combination lock, or just have a key stashed.
