No one would ever make fun of British food again if the Anglosphere was more aware of Dutch food.

I visited a Swedish family a long time ago and they introduced me to one of their favourite snacks, layered bread with mayo in-between each slice, like a cake. They seemed very proud of it.

You reeeeally downplay Smörgåstårta (pinnacle of any scandinavian festivity food imo) with this description. You have white bread with layered savory fillings - this is correct. But the contents should be like 40% shrimp, in what you call a Skagenröra or similar. And sallad leafs, cucumber slices, cold smoked salmon (very important), lemon slices and tomato. Lots of dill as well.

I promise it's the best.

My hot take is that beans are great, and the brits are right to put them on everything

I’ve never understood the hate. Beans on toast is the culinary equivalent of a grilled cheese and more nutritionally complete.

Pickled herring + onions on a bun is up there for top ten best street foods though.

The only good parts about the Dutch kitchen are the fried and deep fried snacks. The herring may be the only exception. Everything else.. fully agree.

But bitterballen is honestly nothing to be proud of. I was at a dutch christmas bouffé once, and it was so bleak. Pea soup with prk, bitterballen, root vegetable mash. Barbaric.
