We're all cool with that. Go nuts.

[–] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 27 points 5 days ago

Finally war does something helpful.

Oh no! Anyway…

Escalation potential or a bluff?

If I'm analysing this right, it's neither.

Iran is clearly trying to break the alliance network between USA, its vassal state Israel, and their allies, both other governments and corporations. And it's doing so by showing that:

  1. Those alliances don't benefit USA's allies. For example, showing that USA won't defend them when they're attacked, and instead will run away with tail between legs.
  2. Those alliances cost too much to USA's allies. For example, corporations put their investments at risk by simply being associated with the United-Statian government. (Remember corpos don't give a fuck about human lives, but they do care about money.)

The news is an example of #2. From Iran's PoV the best outcome is OpenAI cutting ties with the rogue state; the second best is to get rid of its tendrils in the region. So the goal is not escalation, but the threat needs to have some bite so it can't be a simple bluff. Also note Iran already attacked AWS data centres so…

I also don't think indiscriminate killing is part of Iran's goals (unlike USA's and Israel's) so issuing a pre-emptively warning lets people to evacuate the region. This also helps to further disrupt operations so it's a win-win.

So what you are trying to say is that the leadership in Iran is using their brain cells and the USA leadership isn't

You need to have a braincell in order to use it tho. It's an unfair comparison between the two.

[–] lvxferre@mander.xyz 6 points 5 days ago

Yup, pretty much.

[–] tyler@programming.dev 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yeah Iran has been preparing for this for decades and it absolutely shows.

cellular command structure, complete control of the straight with an army that has 1/100th the budget, less than a quarter of the naval fleet of the US, 1/30th the airpower, and has hardly any support in the region compared to pretty much all of europe and the Middle East actively providing support to the US. The U.S. has claimed multiple times it’s stopped Iran’ss ability to fight and that hasn’t been true a single time.

They're bashing millions of dollars in equipment with tens of thousands of dollars in equipment. There is absolutely positively no way for them to win the war but they can make it so prohibitively expensive as to be untenable. That's the only strategy that ever worked against imperial armies.

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

No im sorry this sounds too much like strategy.

[–] lvxferre@mander.xyz 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Military is expected to strategise, not just to go loco-loco.

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

No im sorry thats nerd shit. Also cheating. Im telling their mom.

[–] lvxferre@mander.xyz 1 points 4 days ago

They aren't even save-scumming or modding to remove FoW. That's fiiiine.

Anyone downvoting this gif is a bitter jerk. lol

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 1 points 5 days ago

There seem to be a ton lately, probably leaking over from reddit lol

[–] aviationeast@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yes they just plug in into the DHD whenever they want to use it over the space force.

[–] Chakravanti@monero.town 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Ask Kaylee Frye.

[–] slingstone@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I'm glad I'm not the only one whose mind went here.

Now I can safely point out that destroying the Stargate would have terrible consequences. The naquadah power source would take out a significant chunk of real estate.

[–] barnaclebutt@lemmy.world 27 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Oh no. Don't. Not Open AI. Sam Altman is such a cool dude. Just don't also blow up beloved Jared Kushner at a meeting with his bribe fund too. Or, finally release the Epstein files. All those things would be terrible. Just leave the AI alone. I need RAM prices to be absurdly high otherwise I'll have fun.

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 3 points 5 days ago

Oh god, what if they bombed silicon valley? We would have no choice but to surrender.

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 26 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I have to say, somehow I missed where openAI was building this until the war news.

[–] rem26_art@fedia.io 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yeah same, I kinda just thought they were building it in Texas or something. But apparently, its being built in Abu Dhabi

[–] setsubyou@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

That’s because it was announced as a US AI infrastructure project that would generate jobs in the US etc. They started looking into other locations really quickly. But I guess a lot will still be in Texas.

[–] Soapbox@lemmy.zip 18 points 5 days ago

Hot damn. Dont threaten me with a good time!

[–] theblurstoftimes@leminal.space 17 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Oh come on Iran, there's like only 3 places DT is always at.

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Trump is the least competent opponent Iran could wish for.

[–] cynar@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

The allies, in WWII had a similar choice. They decided not to kill Hitler. At that point he was making enough mistakes that his replacement would be sufficiently more competent to outweigh the benefits.

Right now, Iran is a quite limited war. Going after trump would massively escalate it. Iran doesn't want mushroom clouds over multiple cities.

[–] Saledovil@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

Killing a head of state isn't actually effective. E.g. the ongoing 🇮🇷 war.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 15 points 5 days ago

Interesting concept. Large countries are controlled by wealthy people and corporations, but even a small country has more resources than many larger businesses. So, a small country can threaten businesses that control a larger country in order to influence the larger country.

So, there are two outcomes that I can see. Either the larger country is played by the smaller country, or the larger country pays even more to the business, causing further inequality and dissatisfaction among the masses. Or I guess the large country could abandon the business. So that's three obvious possibilities.

When Money is the controlling power of a nation (even when the political façade of that nation is Democracy) it makes sense for those the power controlling the nation attacks, to respond by going after Money.

By the way, this doesn't just apply to nations at war, but also to civil society groups within nations were the greatest power is Money.

[–] Zos_Kia@jlai.lu 4 points 4 days ago

That'd be hilarious because they promised a bazillion data centers and barely delivered 3 and now 1 might get bombed.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

Oh no, please don't. I'll be really mad

[–] herseycokguzelolacak@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago

I have been following this dude for a while now. He's a top tier troll. Best in the world.

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 1 points 5 days ago

This whole thing is idiotic.
