Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Funny that people are calling it a democracy where people are voting for a person that kinda will maybe vote for one of two men but maybe not and then someone after the voting redraws the voting districts so the "right" one wins... How bad have I misunderstood the american voting system?

I was thinking of the system in USA, which is not uncommonly called a democracy, but it feels weird to me as the voters are so far removed from the actual election of leadership. And as stated, I suspect I've missed some parts there. India on the other hand, as I suspect yo're referring to (because I've heard "worlds largest democracy" about it earlier) I'm even more lost but still curious, are there much protests or other kind of upset gatherings around the elections?

In the past, yes. But now the paramilitary is brought in.

No, in most countries it works fine without it.

You should see the heavily armed atmosphere at my place, tomorrow being the general elections for us. I live in the World's Largest Democracy.

I don't think I've ever seen police or any security when I voting. Unless the the old lady that checks your ID counts.

World's Largest Democracy.

By headcount. The US is still the largest by mass.

Last time I checked, Canada is larger than the US and still a democracy

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

As I love to say to my fellow Americans: "Land doesn't vote." It's the mass of the people that matters.

Do you think Canada outweighs the US?

[–] micek@feddit.nu 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Well I've heard rumors that Utah and California has about equal amounts of votes, land doesn't vore? Please tell me I'm wrong!

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

You're wrong for the Senate, right for the house and electoral college. But for the Senate, representation is not based on population, so Wyoming for example has outsized influence.

[–] MastKalandar@feddit.online 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

What's the population of the US ??

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

The real question is: what's the average weight of us Americans.

[–] kbal@fedia.io 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He's probably including the mass of the land.

[–] FiskFisk33@startrek.website 3 points 1 week ago

It's a joke on fat Americans

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

India? Yes. Well. Is it still a democracy? I think that perhaps the fact that the army is involved shows that it really isn't anymore.

Ain't a democratic election unless there's a lottery option on the ballot.

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

When there are only two options and they both suck? Probably.
