I can be in a voice chat and instantly communicate with people from all around the world. Last night I was playing a video game with a dude from India, a lady from Australia, a guy from South Korea, and several Americans from different states. And we could all talk to each other in real time.
Kings of old could not even imagine such a thing.
What was that on/over (platform)?
Discord. I know there are some valid criticisms of the company, but it's hard to convince 600+ people to all switch to a different platform, and I don't want to fracture a community I've spent the better part of a decade building.
How did you find them (the people)? What kind of group or server is it and how dou become aware of the audience you're running with?
You mentioned you built it gradually over time...
It's a server I created for my Guild Wars 2 guild. Most of us have been playing the game for 10+ years, so when I started the server, we already had a small pool of members built in. My guild grew to the point that we needed to make a second guild, since we hit the player limit ingame. Then we needed to make another guild for the same reason, and so on. I currently control 8 guilds ingame, between my two main accounts (each account can be in a total of 6 guilds, so I have to switch to my alt account to run the other two guilds).
We are mainly focused on training new players on how to succeed in Raid encouters, Dungeons, and other PVE content. So we get a lot of new people joining the guild/server to learn. We don't require people to join our guild to play with us or join our discord server, sometimes we run with PUGs (MMORPG speak for strangers) in our Raid party, and when we do we send them the link to join our server, since voice chat makes it easier to communicate quickly. Once they're a member of the server, they usually stay, though some leave the server once we are done with the Raid.
I also get approached by new-ish players ingame, because they see the guild tag above my head and know our reputation for helping newbies. So I invite them to the server/guild if they want some guidance.
We started out with 34 people, and as of last night, we have 616 members. We've had a few people leave, and I've had to ban a few people for behavioral issues (we do not tolerate any -ism or -phobia in our space). But we've grown a lot, and built a positive and supportive community along the way. We've even had a few IRL meetups for folks who are able to attend. The last one was in Vegas, and 41 people showed up. We had a blast.
From the comforts of my bed chambers, a reflecting mirror shows me my favorite performances on demand, and when I tire of them I may seek almost the entirety of mankind's knowledge via my personal looking glass and converse with other like-minded sorcerers across the world on any such matter we choose.

Spices. A variety of foods from foreign lands. Both fresh fruits and vegetables from around the world, and dishes like enchiladas, and pizza, and angel food cake. Just a crazy another of things we get to eat today that would have only been for the rich or the explorer.
Food from around the world, and out of season too! Unique cooking methods! OMG, stable oven temperatures!
For real. We take for granted to endless variety of dishes we can go get or make at any time. It seems so normal but is such a recent thing really
Draft- and (usually) pest-free buildings, with climate control. Outside light without outside pests. On-demand light. Instant access to high-quality concerts and entertainment of any type. Almost-instant communication with every corner of your kingdom - and those of your enemies and allies. Accurate maps, mostly accurate weather prediction.
So much! The ones I don't think I've seen mentioned are:
Long distance travel and communication. I flew a couple thousand kilometres for a wedding. Imagine the hassle of doing that as an ancient king. My folks and sister live an ocean away, I still call them weekly without effort.
Modern physiotherapy. I'm in my 40s and still play sports 4 times a week because brilliant physios have fixed me more times than I can count.
Books. There are more books exactly up my alley then I'll ever have time to read.
Kings from which epoch? There's currently a king in England and I doubt any of my luxuries will ever surpass his.
But if we mean medieval times, I say, HOT WATER ON TAP ON DEMAND. You just open the tap even in winter, water comes out hot. No need to wait for your servants to gather some cold as water, then spend hours warming it up
Even a poor person with no dental insurance can get cheaper and better dental care than any Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh ever could. Not to mention even the cheapest wonderbread that is seen as the symbol of bland and boring is actually really, really revolutionary compared to any bread that came before it.
We're living in a world of healthcare denial by lunatics like RFK Jr. But once upon a time some geniuses at a boring bread company decided 'let us fortify our basic bread with minerals and nutrients that aren't normally there. This is being eaten by everyone anyway, so let us eliminate rickets and other vitamin/mineral deficiency diseases with something that costs next to nothing'.
And it fucking worked! I should mention that people like RFK Jr. were always around. In the first 30 years of the 20th century in the American South there were diseases that cropped up due to a lack of vitamins or mineral (my memory on the whole thing is fuzzy) that didn't happen before. This was because new machines to refine grinding corn threw out the stuff that contained the needed stuff to prevent those diseases. It took a long time for people to just say 'that shit was good actually, let's not throw it out!'
