So this is a common thing and not just me. I think I've said in a similar situation that I'd answer later or smth like that

Yes, this is an intentional device to create stress and increase interaction.

I have read confirmation disabled everywhere. So I open every message and then don't respond until I want to

There is hardly ever any reason to have read receipts (WhatsApp blue ticks) enabled. They almost always only cause problems. Even for the messages you send, if they haven't replied, does it really matter if you can see blue ticks or not? Try turning of read receipts for a week and see how much better your life gets. It will significantly reduce drama in your life and cost you nothing.

The only person I care to see read receipts from is my wife, and that's easy to implement since she's one of about 4 people in my life who uses Signal (where I keep read receipts on). All the WhatsApp wankers can wait for a reply at my convenience.

No worries, i can trust my ADHD side to forget about it anyway.

Poor person on the other end, but not much i can do to help it.

This is why dumb phones are better. I never worry abt sending a read receipt, why is that even a thing?

Or use a text app that doesn't support read receipts, or one that lets you disable them (plus the "I'm typing a message" indicator).

Iirc I disabled that shit back in the msn messenger days (though I used trillian, not sure if the official client had the option).

Everyone in my country uses Whatsapp and it let's you disable read receipts at the cost of not being able to see whether others have seen your message.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, that's a fair tradeoff.

I'm technically using GrapheneOS and they don't support any of the "fancy" features, just plain simple SMS.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Same, though I think that's more on the texting app than the OS itself, but I guess it does depend on what the OS exposes and how much it locks down SMS stuff even with SMS permissions.

I’m very wary of my mental budget. I can sense when trying to respond to a message can increase my anxiety levels just enough to bring me a panic attack.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 6 points 3 weeks ago

I forget how it works on Lemmy but in PieFed you can toggle the notification as unread again. You can also view different categories of notifications separately, for new posts from communities that you've asked to follow, or moderation events (on PieFed we actually get notifications for these), or comment replies, so as not to have to see it, waiting for me...
