This hits home as an older guy. The school friends that I've held on to are the closest people to me. But I only see them once or twice a year. I wouldn't expect my child to really get to know them but they are very important to me.

Boomers routinely got a dime or a quarter from relatives for just showing up and giving aunts and uncles a hug. In 1960, you could get two comic books and a candy for 25 cents. A family reunion was an occasion to achieve untold riches.
These days there's less hugging, less loot and less happiness all around!
I guess my extended family was poor, I have never experienced this. And I'm not quite that old, grew up in the 70s. The most I got for allowance was .0.25/week but there were a ton of weeks where it was zero.

I am forty years old and I still resent this being done to me as a child. Nobody should force their child to hug someone.

I've always struggled with interactions. Didn't like it as a kid.
That said, I often wish I'd learned more about how to behave in polite company, because what seems obvious to others is not obvious to me.
With my own kids, I certainly don't "force them" to hug creepy old people, but encouraging them to greet acquaintances is just part of the normal things you teach kids because saying hello to people is not in fact intuitive.

That is not at all what I'm talking about and, no, it was not the worst thing to happen.
I tell my kid that they don't HAVE to hug anyone but I would appreciate if they hugged gestures at family members and important people to us

These are your kith and kin. We gather whenever someone passes to poke them with a stick to make sure they're really dead, chuck 'em in a fire then sing it's raining men hallelujah while we scatter the ashes (this is my actual funeral plans if you're going to steal it you have to tell me first)
