what kind of algorithm are you talking about?

Any kind of discovery algorithm.

I want stars to mean something so that I discover popular things even if I’m not following anyone that specifically liked or reposted it.

They could be as simple as lemmy’s algorithms (hot, active, etc) but literally anything would be an improvement to at least my experience on mastodon.

Personally I use third party apps like Sill, Fediview and Murmel and Phanpy which all have versions of algorithmic timelines for catchup. Whether something of this kind of built in to Mastodon in future is still open for discussion, but I’m not aware of a plan to spend time on it in the next couple of releases at least.

Mastodon will never actually get better with the kinds of people it attracts. Financial stability may be possible though.
