I'm not a huge gamer anymore so I actually reduced my setup from 3 16:9 monitors to a single 21:9 monitor. I find myself more focused on the task I am doing when there isn't the distraction of so many open windows.

I recently got this new solid walnut tabletop which is much heavier than the old IKEA tabletop I had that could be pushed around.

I am looking for someone to help the Science Fiction community flourish. To potentially help refine the community description and our getting started post. Even if you don't want to moderate I would accept any ideas people have.

It will probably be a thankless job with no benefit at all other than seeing this community grow. As of now there is very little moderation actually needed.

Let me know if you are interested either in this post or in a direct message.

I've noticed that I often wake up to some notifications after going to sleep at midnight local time. It's like opening some presents every morning.

I've been trying to get an active mod to take over on the lemmy.world battlestations community, but despite my efforts posting in the lemmy.world support community which the admins have suggested doing for this exact issue there has been no change. https://lemmy.world/u/mandlar

In general I find it pointless for there to exist a million empty communities even when the creators have good intentions. Most of them are sub communities of a broader category which only serves to unnecessarily split a community while there is barely traffic in the broader topic. You shouldn't make a more specific topiced community unless the subject you want to discuss is getting burried in overwhelming traffic of the broader community.

Anyone looking forward to this? I'm liking the retro-futurism aesthetic. I've had mixed impressions of pass Wes Anderson movies, but its possible I just don't "get it". Maybe the aesthetic is the point.

Silo TV Series (europe.pub)

Anyone here watching Silo? The 8th episode just aired which means there are two episodes left. So far I've been enjoying this a lot despite some people claiming it was a little slow in the middle. It's only 10 episodes long so even the whole thing goes by pretty quick.

I should really watch Babylon 5 sometime. Instead I keep rewatching old Star Treks. Maybe this new animated production will convince me to watch the previous TV series. Assuming you don't need to have seen everything for this to make sense.

-This post is a work in progress- -If you have anything you would like me to add here let me know-

Here are some resources for getting started on your science fiction adventure.

Book Sources

Classic Authors

Popular Authors

What are you some underrated or lesser known science fiction movies that you recommend?

I've never met anyone that has seen this movie despite it being relatively recent and with some popular actors, but I'd highly recommend Prospect (2018). https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7946422/

It's not a very big budget movie, but it has great aesthetics I think and an engaging story. I'm looking for some new science fiction movies to watch either old or new.

What are some of your favorite science fiction books and why? If you had to pick only a few. As of writing this post my favorites are the following.

  • The Quantum Magician
  • Three Body Problem
  • Children of Time

I tend to like in-depth explanations of the fictional science that exists in-universe as well as a good mystery.
