I wonder if it'll come up on HIGNFY? And if so, will the episode be censored? WIll Hislop be arrested?

A few years ago, the UK Justice Minister called for a ban on the sale of tiny, lipstick-sized mobile phones that came with a voice-changing function built in. (Article) They were being smuggled into prisons and the convicts were using them to commit crimes from the inside, including making intimidating phone calls to witnesses etc.

What a sad day that would be for legitimate rectally-insertable, voice-changing cellphone enthusiasts!

Be honest: was it a time traveller? Are time travellers now coming back for Netanyahu?

Personally, on !action_movies@piefed.social , how I've been doing it so far:

A few flairs for:

  • post content types like Trailer, Review, Full Movie/Show, News, Meta etc.

Loads of (potentially infinite) tags for:

  • finer details, e.g.
    • movie categories, like #HongKongMovies, #SwordandSorcery
    • people, like #JackieChan, #MichaelMadsen

But it's still early days, not sure if that's the best way to use them or if that kind of division is applicable elsewhere.

Someone should do this for members of the Fraternal Order of Police.

And it's already St. Patrick's Day-themed!

Anything to distract from Epstein?

They're trying to appease conservatives, who said marriage equality would end up with craziness like people marrying motor vehicles.

IIRC Virginia Hey, Zhaan in Farscape, kept having to wear that blue body paint 6-8 months a year until she got kidney problems from it and quit the show.

some mistresses were known to advise the King of France in state affairs if he was so infatuated

So... is this Wikipedia's official position on the only reason why a man with power would ever listen to a woman?

All subscribers agree to a contract when they join Prime, she said, giving Amazon the ability to alter the nature of the services provided under the contract.

"Pray I do not alter the nature of the services provided under the contract further."

If one of those posts should be obscured, it's not the one about a strategy game with muskets! :D

These sketches recently came up for auction – very interesting indeed. Clearly the artist was in Macao and possibly near Canton, in or around the time of the First Opium War (1839-1842) – certainly, as Captain John Spencer Churchill died at Macao in 1840 these sketches are slightly later. The sketch of the attack on Canton in 1840 suggests the artist was with the Navy in China – perhaps HMS Volage or HMS Hyacinth. Sadly though they remain unattributed.

As Chinese immigration to California accelerated across the 19th century, the hairstyle known as the queue — a long, braided pony tail — became the subject of white Americans’ fascination, disgust, and legal regulation. Sarah Gold McBride explores why hair served as an index of political subjecthood, and how the queue exposed cracks in American norms regarding gender, economy, and citizenship.

Same post viewed in Lemmy, it's all squashed into the same space as horizontal text.

I've been noticing a few broken links like this on PieFed lately. I don't know if it's something new, or just me noticing it now.

The link breaks part way through. Checking the same post on a Lemmy instance, the link is intact.

Maybe to do with Piefed confusing underscores for formatting with underscores in multiword Wikipedia URLs?

China’s AI industry has drawn increasing media attention as its progress generates excitement and trepidation about a global future fueled by Chinese AI. One dimension of this success is the ability of Chinese actors, such as DeepSeek, to circumvent U.S. restrictions on the export of critical technology. According to Reuters, a U.S. official claimed this week that DeepSeek had evaded export controls to gain access to American AI chips. Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Chinese engineers transported hard drives with hundreds of gigabytes of AI training data in suitcases to Malaysia in order to bypass U.S. restrictions by using American chips outside of China. But the flipside to this story is how U.S. export controls have encouraged the flourishing of China’s domestic AI ecosystem.
