Well, damn. Go Kirkman!

Hmm… for me, it's less about memory and more about helping myself see a pattern of what I like and what I don't, which eventually helps me make better purchasing decisions.

Like, when I look at a list of my favorite games, I can conclusively tell you: I like challenging, replayable games with real-time action, synergy among their mechanics, and mechanical variety.

For me, this knowledge would not have been attainable if I didn't sit down and put together a list of what I like/what I don't like.

I use Gamebrary because it's FOSS, so I suppose you could in theory clone the repo and self-host it, but IDK how self-hosting ready it is.

This game is just Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Mega Mix+ with extra steps 😂 I cannot take it seriously. The combat is so silly.

You can do 1/10th of what you can do in any action game. I can only assume people who call it the best action game of all time either haven't played many action games or just picked it because it's their favorite.

Ima give Sekiro another try. So I admit the first time I maybe didn't give it enough time (stopped at the snake bit) but that's because the rhythm-based, parry-focused gameplay felt boring and too one dimensional.

Ima play a bit longer this time and see if unlocking new techniques makes any difference. I'm not optimistic, but I wanna explore something new for a change, and Sekiro can't be the worst option.

Fuck From Software's offense though… it's boring as shit. I hope Sekiro eventually ends up feeling different.

Just hand this IP to the Hi-Fi Rush devs already…

There already is a Steam page and the description says co-op action RPG.

I mean, perspective matters, I suppose: you could use isometric/top down and 3rd person to make a distinction between PoE and HZD, but then again I don't play either, or ARPGs in general, so that's as nuanced of a take as I could have on this.

Well, I'll be damned… this is looking more and more like a proper action game. Ima give it a shot on release.

God damn, I wish it was a fighter, but I'll take an ARPG. Will give it a shot when it comes out 👐

I'm glad Suda51 is still making new IPs, but I'm kinda over his gameplay? It needs to evolve somehow… like, melee here looks a lot like Killer Is Dead, which was serviceable, but not great.

Of course, everything else is captivating, as it always is, but I'll need more from the gameplay to get invested in this.

Tag fighters aren't my thing and ASW are headed in the opposite direction of what I want from a fighting game, but I'm happy for them! They came a long way and more or less stuck to their guns, which's admirable.

I'm happy to go down with Plus R, P4AU, and Under Night though.

This reads like a crutch though and reflects part of the problem: games are being treated like products and not carefully curated, cohesive experiences, which's why its consistent inclusion everywhere is being criticized.

If everyone is using the same crutch, no one should be surprised if people start complaining they're seeing the same crutch everywhere instead of interesting new ideas.

I'm currently scraping the Steam barrel and I could really use these ports:

  1. Gravity Rush Remastered/Gravity Rush 2: best traversal in gaming. Surprisingly fun combat too. Just pure joy all around.
  2. Viewtiful Joe: integral Kamiya core and probably the closest on this list to actually happening seeing the Clover revival.
  3. God Hand: I have nothing new to add here. All I can do is reiterate the "beat'em goat" claim.
  4. The Red Star: PS2 hidden gem—mix of beat'em up and twin-stick shooter. Proper action game rooted in arcade design principles.
  5. Ketsui: again, all I can do is reiterate the "shmup goat" claim. Criminal this is not on Steam. Come on, M2.

Alternate editions of games we already have on Steam:

  1. Catherine: Full Body: extra stages is cool, but I need the online Colosseum.
  2. Ninja Gaiden II: ugh, this one is obviously never happening at this point. I swear, even if they try a third time, they'll most likely find some way to mess it up.

Definitely never happening: Pikmin. Nintendo suck.

I'm looking for action hidden gems, preferably scripted and linear—no open world or procuderal generation (roguelike, roguelike-like, or roguelite)

Some of my "usual suspects" favorites are Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, Viewtiful Joe, God Hand, and Ninja Gaiden II. On the shmup/twin-stick shooter side: Crimzon Clover, Ketsui, and Assault Android Cactus+.

I also love Catherine, so I wouldn't mind some puzzle thrown in there.

As nonlinear as I can go: The Deadly Tower of Monsters.

I love my favorite games and have been playing them for years, but I disliked about 99% of the games I played.

I don't think I have FoMO or anything; I just find it weird because my taste in music, film, or art/media in general is usually fairly broad. I guess I just wonder why my taste in games is aggressively limited.

It's not for the lack of trying new games; I've tried more or less anything I could find, sometimes because it's popular, other times because it looked interesting, but nothing really hits the mark like my favorite games.

I just don't like what most developers create, I guess?

I'm hoping, by posting this, maybe I can find others who are having a similar experience, and we can share thoughts.
