Naim said Hamas retains its right to resist but is open to long-term arrangements under a genuine political horizon, stressing that disarmament cannot be imposed by international forces or dictated by Israel, which continues to violate key ceasefire commitments.

He also reiterated that any long-term truce must be given the space and seriousness to take shape, as previously outlined in discussions over a 5-10 year calm.

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs said the call has caused widespread distress, noting that efforts to reestablish contact with the caller have failed. It vowed to work with Palestinian officials to investigate the specifics of the assault and verify Barghouti’s condition. The Asra Media Office added that recent intimidation targeting his family reflects a broader pattern of pressure, citing continued isolation, torture, denial of visits, and threats from Israeli minister Itamar Ben Gvir as further evidence of a systematic effort to endanger his life.

The AMO placed full responsibility on Israel for Barghouti’s safety and the well-being of all prisoners, calling on the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and human rights organizations to intervene and launch an independent investigation. It said the international community’s silence enables the continued offenses inside Israeli prisons. Barghouti, a 66-year-old senior Fatah leader seen by many Palestinians as a potential successor to President Mahmoud Abbas, has been imprisoned since 2002 on charges he rejects and does not recognize as legitimate
