So I was thinking of switching my desktop to linux. I have been running fedora on my laptop for 3 years and I really like it. My main question now is just what distro works best for gaming (considering my specs) and can I use VMs in any of the gaming oriented ones (mostly because I don't wanna keep dual booting).

I found a external drive and made a dual boot. I just thought i should let you all know.

Thoughts?

So i have a gaming desktop that not the best or the newest. What takes up most of my drive space is games, updates, and software's. Im wondering if i should switch to linux and if linux will improve any performance for my main machine? If you believe i should switch what os should i go with or why or why not should i switch?

I mostly game and do mess with ollama/ai tools because i think that's cool. I want to do more things in the future but that might beyond my drive space?

What would you advise?

I have tried multiple different versions of proton, ge proton, I have tried the EA launcher, and a few black magic incantations. It either runs at 4fps or will not load at all. I have tried everything i can find on protondb that is not an ancient report.

I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon with an Intel i5. https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd100509-overview-for-thinkpad-x1-carbon-type-20bs-20bt

Coming about three weeks after DXVK 2.6.2, the DXVK 2.7 release adds support for the VK_EXT_descriptor_buffer Vulkan extension by default on newer AMD and NVIDIA GPUs to significantly reduce CPU overhead in games like Final Fantasy XIV, God of War, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Watch Dogs 2, and others.

Lost Ark EAC apparently got enabled for Linux one or two weeks ago and alot of people are able to play according to protondb. But a few seconds after I enter character select I get a message saying that EAC is offline. I've tried proton-em, -ge and experimental but it's the same for all.

I've had the same problem with Armored Core 6 (also EAC), where the multiplayer was working out of the box for others except me.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm missing here? If not, does anyone know other places I could ask for support?

I've been experiencing freezes after ~1h of playing. Those are hard freezes when even switching workspace doesn't work. Restarting the game helps for another hour

I've tried what few options from protondb but haven't noticed much change

Am I the only one?

  • GPU: Radeon 5700 xt
  • CPU: AMD
  • 48 GB RAM
  • SSD

In the current situation, choosing the Windows 11 version for the Legion Go S is a what only a fool would do.

Let’s sum it up:

  • Worse performance across the board
  • Worse power consumption
  • More expensive

The Windows 11 version only makes sense if there are games with anti-cheat that you don’t want to miss on. There are some notable exceptions like GTA 5 Online and APEX Legends where SteamOS support was removed recently. And there’s Fortnite, outside of Steam, that remains unplayable on SteamOS. There’s probably a few more too, but those are the important ones that come to mind. If such titles don’t matter for your gaming patterns, the SteamOS of the Legion Go S version is the obvious choice.

After [seeing the benchmarks], you must be wondering if Lenovo actually bothers with the Windows version at all! Truth is, it’s worse than that. You can’t even find a mention of the SteamOS version of the Lenovo Legion Go S on Lenovo’s website. I am so NOT kidding. There is “View Models” button, but there are no other models apart from the Windows 11 Home version.

I checked a few country sites for Lenovo, and it’s inconsistent as hell for a Global company. France only has the Windows version, Japan doesn’t even list the Legion Go S model (still stuck at the previous Switch like model), and finally I could find the SteamOS version on Lenovo’s site in Indonesia!

So, guys, I don’t want to kill your enthusiasm, but this sounds very much like We are just pretending to release a SteamOS version but in fact we advertise the Windows model everywhere instead. Since I am familiar with large companies, I guess the story was like that. Someone in Business Development managed to secure a deal with Valve, the CEO must have said OK, does not cost much anyway. And then the BD guy went fishing in each territory, asking for the Marketing leaders who wanted to launch that SKU, and turns out most region heads were not interested in hearing about SteamOS. This is probably why you end up with said SKU only listed in some small regions and not the main ones. It’s probably a pilot, at most. I was not in the room, so I don’t really know, but it does sound and smell like this kind of situation.

Well, in the US, if you are actively looking for it, you can find it on Best Buy, at least…

In short, you have SteamOS delivering all the goods, but there’s no appetite on the manufacturer’s side to do anything about it. Sad. Note that Lenovo is the only manufacturer with an official support stated for SteamOS on the Legion Go S. Valve is offering support for additional handhelds (the original Legion Go, and the ROG Ally) but that’s considered experimental and not official at the moment (see their recovery image page).

Hi All,

I am looking at starting a project and was wondering if there was a way to make it so a controller type changed boot conditions. I want to move to linux for my home entertainment and would like to have a ps5 controller boot Lutris and a different controller boot into something like KDE plasma.

Is this a possibility or nonsense?

Will skate. be available for Mac OS, Steam OS, Proton/Linux systems (handle held PCs like the Steam Deck) for Early Access?

• We want to bring skate. to as many platforms as possible and will continue to listen to feedback and look at the feasibility of adding new platforms in the future, but for Early Access launch, Mac OS, Steam OS, Proton/Linux will not be supported.

When playing any windows game the PC heats up to 90 no matter what it is doing. This doesnt happen a lot on other type of games like Wii or GC games (dolphin flatpak). Is there any solution or do I really need to find out how to disable TurboBoost?

I got this Beelink mini pc from Amazon planning to hook it up to my living room TV and play movies and stream TV with. And I was shocked and amazed to discover that this little thing could run games like Hi-Fi Rush and MGSV:PP on max settings! Sure the fans made it sound like a small jet engine, but it never skipped frames or lagged on me even once! I know it's not a power house: it couldn't run Yakuza Zero or Neir Automata very well. But I was still thrilled with what it could do!

Well it shipped with Windows 11, and I finally decided to fix that. A couple days ago I switched over to Mint, tho I'm running Kubuntu now. The switch was quick and painless, and honestly getting used to Linux has been pretty fun! But now it runs a lot of my games like a slide show. I've been digging at this for a few days now, updating drivers and setting up Proton. I've found a lot of helpful guides and stuff on line, but very little about the hardware I have in this situation. Apparently AMD processors are great for Linux, but I feel like it's not working with the integrated graphics card. Tried to find the right driver on their website, but I haven't had much luck. So, here's hoping the community can help. Any tips for a newbie?

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700U (16) @ 4.37 GHz | GPU: AMD Lucienne [Integrated]

UPDATE:

Thanks again to everyone so far that's offered advice, but it hasn't seemed to have helped much..

I made sure the power mode is set to Performance, and turned the settings all the way to their lowest at 1080p. Someone had suggested using Flatseal to check permissions, but steam did not show up there, so it was seemingly a dead end. I even switched to Bazzite.

But I'm still only getting 10fps at most, regardless of graphic settings. I'm not really sure what else to do at this point.

2nd UPDATE:

Potential success! BananaTrifleViolin asked if the games were running in 4k, which I made sure they weren't. But then I got to thinking about my main desktop display. It defaulted to my TV's 4k size, and the game was running in full screen...

So I fixed that and launched Hi-Fi again to test, and managed to get a stable 30fps! Now to figure out how to make this better, lol

FINAL UPDATE:

So, I'm not done tinkering with settings and stuff, I would still like to get the fps higher. But I'm still gonna call this a win here.

Thanks to everyone's help, I've got Hi-Fi running and a smooth 30fps with no input lag! More over, I took this advice to Yakuza to see if this machine could run it now. Sure did! On low settings, I got 30+fps! I'm trying a bunch of other games in my library now, but yea: this is a win!

Short but cute game, was neat to see the video at the end showcasing the steps the developers went through to create it.

I'm feeling a bit nostalgic and wanted to play some of the old COD games, and noticed that remote code execution exploits such as CVE-2018-20817 exist and seem to be unpatched. So I was wondering if this exploit affects or can be mitigated when running through Proton?

As I assume most of these exploits are intended for Windows systems, I'd assume it would be fairly harmless if I could disable mounting the default root filesystem and external drive mounts to the prefix. Digging through winetricks/protontricks I haven't managed to find such an option though.

Hey all!

I'm currently looking to upgrade my Radeon 6600 8GB GPU in my primary gaming rig and I'm currently torn between the Radeon 9600 XT 16GB, which is a "known variable" or the Intel B580 12GB. Obviously, the B580 is around $75-100 cheaper comparing MSRP to MSRP and I've been seeing both pop randomly into stock the last few weeks where I could nab either with a properly timed deal alert.

I'm wondering how all of you Intel Battlemage gamers on Linux have been enjoying your cards. I know Intel has done a lot of work to make it work well on Linux, but there is MUCH less coverage of performance on Linux than on Windows. Most stuff I see is from launch time, which is 6+ months ago, and I know driver support has gained a lot of ground since then.

My primary rig is an AM4-based system with a 5800X CPU, so REBAR and PCIe 4.0 are not a problem for me.
