The endangered little tern has experienced one of its best recorded breeding seasons across New South Wales, sparking hope among conservationists.

Each spring, the small seabirds migrate thousands of kilometres across the ocean from East and South-east Asia to nest on Australian shores.

They lay eggs directly on the sand where they are so well camouflaged they become almost invisible, making them vulnerable to beach visitors and cars.

They are also at risk from predators, flooding and, adverse weather conditions.

For the past 25 years, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has been involved in trying to conserve and monitor the species.

Amidst the dry and arid city of Bharuch in Gujarat, there exists a remarkable house that defies the norm of blasting coolers and air conditioners to beat the heat. Unlike most households, this unique abode manages to remain comfortably cool without any of these devices.

The first clinical trial to test whether adults with peanut allergies can be desensitized has shown great success—with two-thirds of participants able to consume the equivalent of five peanuts at the end of the study without reacting.

Known as oral immunotherapy, the approach has been successful in infants and children worldwide, but this first-of-its-kind study—the Grown Up Peanut Immunotherapy trial—shows adults can benefit too.

In trials, in 708 women, when combined with hormone therapy, the drug doubled the time the cancer took to grow, from 3.6 months to 7.3 months, and shrank tumours in 23% of patients.

To date, 5,282 hens have been distributed to residents, and not only have the residents received a plentiful supply of free eggs, but food waste has also been averted from landfill as chickens are fed kitchen scraps which would otherwise be thrown away.
