The World Food Programme will be forced to cut off one million people in war-torn Myanmar from its vital food aid because of “critical funding shortfalls”, it said on Friday.

Chinese mercenaries are said to have reached Kyaukphyu following fierce clashes in the region, known for its Chinese-backed projects.

Chaung U People's Defence Force released a statement indicating that on March 4, fighting occurred between the combined resistance forces and junta soldiers along the Monywa-Mandalay highway in the Sagaing Region. All but four of the deportees were reportedly conscripted by the regime.

Myanmar’s junta leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, is set to travel to Russia in the coming days at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as reported by the junta-controlled Myanmar Television on 28 February.
